out now
The Ferryman stands in shadow and waits. The Ferryman giggles, hungers and hates. The Ferryman comes to carry away All who behold the crown and disobey.
Christmas Eve. Dr Gideon Parr is summoned to an asylum to check on a patient. A patient who claims to be haunted by a terrible curse. A patient who claims to be Queen Victoria.

Well, that's a pleasant surprise, I don't think I was expecting it until next Tuesday! I've just downloaded it and am making a start now

I was pretty distracted when I listened to this one, and I've also never experienced an MR James story, so I feel a lot of this story kind of passed me by. I'll have to give it another go when I'm more focussed. I thought the table turning moment was pretty obvious from the get-go though. I couldn't guess the motivation (I don't think it was guessable!), but it seemed pretty inevitable to me.

This has been my favourite Torchwood release for a while. Not that I haven't enjoyed the others, but this ticks many boxes for me. Going into it completely blind, not knowing how things will pan out. Lots of twists and turns. A nod to MR James {Spoiler} Casting the Runes came to mind ... ... and a completely standalone story in many ways. This works terrifically well simply as a Christmas ghost story and, let's face it, who doesn't love those? A word for Rowena Cooper, who puts in possibly her best performance for the range - beginning as very fragile and disorientated, but gradually building up sense and assurance.

And there goes to show I am not really made for Torchwood... I got this since every review I see praises this story. I may rain on the parade of everybody who is singing praise to this release, but it did nothing for me.
It was pretty obvious for me what would happen in the end, and therefore, it did not hold mystique or excitement for me. I actually love the stories of MR James and this release is said to emulate these stories... but I also did not get the same feeling of foreboding from this. I also thought the atmosphere for it was not quite there.
But maybe I was also not in the right mood for a Christmas ghost story. I do not know, but listening to this yesterday night, it just was not my cup of tea.
I might come back to it at a later date and try again.

Just listened to it. It was very creepy and unsettling. To tell the truth, I had fears of the fate for Dr. Gideon Parr throughout, but I didn't suspect that he was behind the trouble in the first place.

I particularly like the ones that end with a Torchwood member (or Bilis Manger) being ruthless towards their opponent.

Appropriately Jamesian in both tone and style with some lovely hints and nods scattered throughout. Absolutely adore the ending as well. And of course it rather goes without saying that Rowena Cooper continues to be excellent.
