So I was thinking recently I have noticed that that a lot of my favorite DW characters seem to be some of the more underrated and divisive characters that fans have trouble agreeing on and sometimes find controversial. I thought it would be interesting if I asked what are your favorite underrated and or divisive characters? Why are they underrated and or divisive? What do you find special and unique about them?
Mine:
12 and Clara: I know, what haven’t I said about these two?! They are definitely an acquired taste both as a pair and individuals. People say 12 is too old and grumpy, don’t understand his character development and his love of rock music.People say Clara is too bossy, overly powerful for a companion, and went on too long. People say they were toxic together. I will admit I wasn’t sure about them at first but the more I watched them the more I fell in love with them and their dynamic. They are so unique! What’s interesting about them is despite Clara being human they are both equals with each other. There are many interpretations of their dynamic but for me they have this fascinating almost beauty and the beast understated tragic romance that really appeals to me. Separately, Clara is like a human version of the Doctor with all the flaws and cunning that come with it. 12 has one of the most nuanced and unique character journeys of any Doctor!
You know, if you keep it up, lol, I think you're going to sell me on 12 and Clara. I mean, I can stand back and disapprove - "He's two hundred times her age" - even though that's really not a 12 and Clara thing but applies to most companions in general, but
that really was the way the show was written, wasn't it? I don't think I can really disagree with a single thing you said here, which certainly
does lend a different perspective.
I guess one of my favorite divisive characters must be Adric - maybe not so much a divisive character anymore because I think Big Finish has done such good with the character that I think many more people have warmed to the character. I have always been very fond of Adric. I was pretty shocked indeed the first time I saw the end of
Earthshock, I just stared at the credits rolling in a state of complete disbelief.
At the time, I'd seen nothing of Jamie and nothing of Ian that I could remember. All I knew of male companions was Harry Sullivan and Adric until Turlough came along, which made Harry and especially Adric very important in my eyes.
I think I've heard Adric being criticized for being petulant and know-it-all, but he really is a bright fellow who does have a right to a lot of confidence and generally seems to mean well rather than being arrogant, and maybe it helps to remember that at one point the Fifth Doctor was pretty much running his own orphanage and perhaps a bit of petulance might have given things some realism?
I still look up to Adric actually - I'd have never dreamed of it, but I finally ended up with mathematics as one of my hobbies (I'm terrible at it, lol) - and I think very highly of just about anything Matthew Waterhouse does. His Dark Shadows work for Big Finish is amazing.
