Another for kestrel to pick up on his next update.
When it comes to The Bounty of Ceres I'm biased I suppose. Ever since I first heard it I loved it. I'll try and explain why..
It just sounds so retro, so black and white. The sparse music and sound effects combine to conjure up a vivid TV episode in my head.
A cold, isolated mining colony with an unknown threat, retro computer noises and clanking maintenance bots. Even the handguns sound futeristically 1960s, and the whole thing is accompanied by a perfectly sparse and eerie soundtrack which compliments the remote setting.
The mystery is small scale too which is my kind of adventure. On repeat listens, there are clues scattered throughout as to what is really going on, but I'm glad to say I missed them on my first listen and just allowed the sound of the whole thing to wash over me.
Peter Purves take on the First Doctor is superb, so good in fact that I can see William Hartnell in my minds eye when Purves is playing him. The script helps, and the Doctor here is old but oh-so-wise and always a couple of steps ahead of the game, like a brilliant footballer who plays the first 2 yards in his head when his legs start to go a bit.
The regulars and the supporting cast all convince, with the 3 crew members of the facility clearly feeling the strain of life on an unforgiving ball of ice and rock in deep space. Paranoia ensues, and the mystery builds slowly.
A bit of a belter in my book.

It’s great and a truly underrated story from Big Finish’s now planet sized catalogue.
Personally, I adore how small scale the adventure is. Really wish we had more of that outside of just the Short Trips range.

And another thing I love about it is the misprint on the CDs, 'The Boutny of Ceres.'
I wouldn't like ALL of 'em to be like this, but 1 is just fine.

Always a welcome relisten but i am one who enjoyed all of these early releases of both the First and second Doctors. this is always a strong one simple and effective and also a great fan of a Doctors Tale

Chaps, probably my favourite Big Finish story. AHHH lol i already have one in my top spot which isnt likely to get knocked off. i think the glory of the story is the simplicity of the location you FEEL the location and the cast are all very believable in their roles and the incidental music is so very simple and easy and not over used. am in the pub relistening having a breakfast and its blooming cold outside

I've just been out to feed the birds (they were watching and waiting) and there is a real chill in the air, not quite as cold as where you are no doubt.
I expect Ian Potter was doing cartwheels when he heard the post production on this one, it is spot on. It does raise an interesting query; I wonder if a writer with a good script sometimes feels a bit let down when they hear the final product, as it isn't how they imagined it to sound. Edit: you are spending too much time on Flemings Island.

To be honest I find them all really hard to listen to unless I was invited to the recording. You focus on your own mistakes so much listening to them fresh, and if you're writing something else at the time that can really knock your confidence. Somehow, if you've heard the performances in the room you go in knowing what to expect and that there are no surprise changes made by the director after you and the script editor signed off on things and that makes it a lot easier. Direction, performances and sound design often really elevate what you've done ridiculously but not always, and, in my experience, they won't improve your opinion of a script you're not 100% happy with, so there are a handful I've still not listened to because I know they'd demoralise me. This is definitely one of the ones I wasn't present for that I found much easier to enjoy though, everyone's great!
