It's interesting to do a bit of research in to the somewhat troubled history of Renaissance of the Daleks, where the plot needed rewriting, in part, to ensure that overall it made sense.
One thing that is apparent is that the story, which involves an alternate Earth history where the locals in London are preparing for a Dalek invasion (which according to the 5th Doctor should have already happened), is slightly bonkers.
The characters are a bit marmite; an over-the-top US military General, a noble knight from the time of the crusades, a female Vietnam war helicopter pilot and a southern slave called Floyd who is found on the side of The Confederates during the American Civil War...and that is just the Doctor's new team.
As for Floyd, a few people have expressed surprise as to why he would be with the pro-slavery southern states, but this is explained within the story that he had to follow his 'master' to the war and although his master died, he was still on that side when the Tardis turns up. A quick google search shows that 'after war broke out in 1861, thousands of enslaved men were forced to accompany their masters into the army as body servants or camp slaves'. I doubt Floyd could just say 'right, I'm off' when his master copped it.
Throw in toy Daleks and a large alien consciousness, weird timelines and an even weirder ending involving a big dalek building made from loads of daleks (!) and it could be argued that the rewrites maybe didn't do their job. But it is pretty good fun and kept me more than engaged for 2 hours!

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I listened to this one just a few weeks ago and was impressed at just how bonkers everything was and also at how it all seemed to work by having mad plot points thrown at it until something stuck.
Is this also the only story in the entirety of the BF oeuvre that doesn't have a credited writer?

It was from an Idea from Christopher H Bidmead wasn’t it that they somehow had to make coherent but don’t think he wanted credit for what it became....goes to his Big Finish Companion to brush up lol but it did have the interocitor in it 😂 And William Hope from Aliens

very VERY few stories have lead to me giving up on them part way through. Fewer still never actually got an eventual “ohh just keep at it man!” full listen. I mean, I finished Exile. I liked Zagreus. But this one...... ohh boy. OHHH BOY.

You know, I’m actually rather curious to give this a listen now. Especially if it’s as mental as you all say it is.

Christopher H had been script editor during my favourite period of Doctor Who to date, and his three television stories are wonderful. The anticipation I had for Renaissance of the Daleks was huge.
You know when you listen to (or watch) a story, and as time goes on, it dawns on you that it just isn't very good? That sinking feeling you get when something you had really looked forward to was not engaging you at all? When you realise you're having to work at sticking with it rather than enjoying it? All these things occurred during part one of the story - I'm genuinely not sure I made it all the way to the end of episode four. Perhaps I missed something wonderful.

Perhaps I missed something wonderful. Methinks not!
Renaissance of the Daleks is still probably worth a listen all the way through though, even if it's only to enjoy the madness of it all...

It's something, I can say that for sure. Everything after part 1 becomes this weird haze in my mind, and I almost never have this with even bad BF plays. The troubled production absolutely shows in the end product.

As promised, I gave this one a punt. And wow, what an absolute mess this was. Kudos to Big Finish for trying to make this script somewhat comprehensible but I think the main problem with it is that it has far too many ideas and has no idea what to do with any of them. The idea of the Dalek ‘non’ invasion of Earth is a great one and it’s the story I wish they had solely focused on but then comes along toy Daleks and a seemingly omniscient intelligence and it all falls to pieces.
Side characters weren’t especially memorable aside from mainly Floyd and only because of his strange call he gives soon after his introduction (words honestly fail me at that point) Feel like had this been released now, one of them would definitely have become a companion. Trouble is they’re all just so generic and lacking in personality beyond basic character traits.
If anything, I’m just curious to know what the original script was like.
