I was bought Top Secret Life of Edgar Briggs for Christmas and have just finished watching the first two episodes. Mark Eden is one of the regular cast opposite David Jason. He plays a great part.
Sad news and an awful disease. RIP.

He'll surely go down in TV history for his Alan Bradley in Corrie, one of THE villains in soap - before there were many.
For me his Marco is the first guest character in the show to really be interesting and it's a damn shame we can hear it and look at some stills but never see that performance. The Loose Cannon recon where he reprises the role - in an "Italian Villa" looking an awful lot like an English semi destached - was one of their best.

*sighs* The very first historical figure we ever encountered in Doctor Who and just as much part of the main cast in those stories as our four travellers. One of my favourite guest characters in one of my favourite stories. Even after all these years.
Arrivederci, Marco Polo. And well done, Mark Eden.

Hello again.
I waited with such excitement for the release of Marco Polo as a soundtrack CD in the Nineties. What a grounded performance Mark Eden gave as Marco Polo. He set the standard for guest stars playing historical characters. Those seven episodes just zip along with his narration providing the framing device. His sparring with the Doctor and Tegana provide great drama while his conversations with Ian, Barbara and Susan are lovely moments. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

For anyone curious to see Eden chat about Marco Polo, Richard Bignell recently boosted a 2002 "Making Of" documentary made for Loose Cannon's telesnap reconstructions. Featuring appearances also from Zienia Merton (Ping-Cho), Philip Voss (Acomat), Carole Ann Ford (Susan), Waris Hussein (Director), and Barry Newbery (Designer). You can find it here.
