Time to help fill out the Index! I've listened to so much Doctor Who lately, I'm limiting myself to those stories still remember clearly, so hopefully I won't wind up flooding the board with too many threads.... Which brings us to Catch-1782.
Hooo boy was this a weird story. I loved the idea of it: Mel's uncle was a fun companion, and the idea of a small town "missing person case" across time was fun (with no over-reliance on goofy monsters, always a plus). But when it comes to the execution... I dunno. I'm on record, repeatedly, I think, as not being terribly fond of the TV companions of this era (Sarah, Leela and Romana were so good, and then...) and this story did not do much to change my mind. Mel just has so little agency, spending most of the story confined to a room pining for a past she can't quite remember, because she's drugged out of her mind.
I think nothing argues against the concept of even having a companion in the first place, really, as using a companion solely as a damsel. It's just so... frustrating. And worse than just frustrating, also boring.
Well, what did y'all think?

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Mel has a rough time of it in this story but the most unbelievable thing is that her own uncle seems to be pretty much ok with it. “Oh, web of time. Sure thing, well I guess six months being drugged up and held against her will by a maniac who thinks he’s in love with her isn’t too bad.” Which is a shame because the story is pretty good fun: a low-stakes mystery (apart from the whole thing with Mel, of course) which are often more personal and less epic and more gripping because of it.

Not one of BF best releases, there doesn't seem to be that imminent threat element to the story & the damsel in distress companion is a step back from the strong female characters BF usually write so well for.

Honestly I always appreciate it when characters just go with the Doctor and take them at their word. Doctor Who has wasted so much time over the centuries with pointless antagonism. Unless it's core to the story, better to skip past it. The only thing that really holds the story back for me is, well... (imagine me gesturing about vaguely) everything with Mel.

Literally just finished this story 1 hour ago.. I liked it.. Wasn't earth shattering- but to me, solid.

I don’t mind the story too much perhaps not a strong tale but plenty to enjoy. It does give Mel something to do and there are strong performances from the cast of characters somehow you get the feeling it could have been So much more. It’s also good to have them explore Mels family history and Bonnie gives a very mellow performance strong and mature like it should have been played on television (if only -sighs).She does seem very damsel in distress but can accept it given her circumstances trapped back in time with no hope of rescue and getting there without a Tardis. I wouldn’t avoid it...and have given it a few relistens so it’s obviously one I enjoy on some level

I listened to this years ago, when I was starting to get in to BF. At the time I remember thinking that I'll never listen to this one again, as it had very little drama etc, but I've mellowed a bit so will add it to the app.
