Time to help fill out the Index! I've listened to so much Doctor Who lately, I'm limiting myself to those stories still remember clearly, so hopefully I won't wind up flooding the board with too many threads.... Which brings us to Circular Time.
Which marks, I think, Big Finish's first anthology release in the Main Range--and idea that would eventually produce the Short Trips range. Which... I just adore and cannot possibly overstate my gratitude for.
Circular Time itself, well, it's easy to see why it had such an impact. These four stories are short, lean, and a lot of fun. The big highly for me (surprise, surprise) was getting to hear David Warner as Sir Isaac Newton. Not just a fun performance, it was a very interesting and unique take on the character in general. I didn't exactly leave Circular Time wanting "more," but I definitely wanted to see more of Isaac, and learn more about what his whole deal was. Such a great villain, he feels almost wasted in such a short story. He could easily have sustained a full-length story--or sequence of full-length stories.
What did you think?

It's possible I missed it when making the Index? I know it's come up fairly often here, in other threads (Colditz, too) but AFAIK there's no dedicated thread. Spare Parts also seems to be missing a dedicated thread, to my surprise, as it's the one story that -everyone- seems to adore above all others.

I love Circular Time. Every story has something wonderful. Warner as Isaac Newton, Nyssa finding love, and "Winter" just kicks me in the gut every time. Great anthology.

This one is a great hidden gem of the Monthly Range. The Fifth Doctor has had so many anthology style releases over the years that I think this one has fallen by the wayside somewhat.

I suspect it's because of the title--it's kind of dull and doesn't really indicate that it's an anthology set. It makes it hard to go through a list of the MR and pick out the anthologies when only the half of them (or fewer?) have that helpful, "and other stories" bit in the title.

It makes it hard to go through a list of the MR and pick out the anthologies when only the half of them (or fewer?) have that helpful, "and other stories" bit in the title. There's a lovely bit of poetry in Spring and Other Stories, in retrospect. The anthology itself is a nice, cosy idea. I rather like it. Four stories from four stages in a Doctor and companion's life together (and without one another). Circular Time has a few firsts to its name, I think it's the first audio to have a Time Lord regenerate into something other than a human, the first time we drop in on Stockbridge ("Did you know someone once bowled me a grenade on that cricket pitch?" "Oh, my." "Yes... The very definition of a sticky wicket..."), and I think there's still nothing quite like what Winter does with the Doctor. In the greater context of their travels, after harrowing stories like Creatures of Beauty, Spare Parts and The Mutant Phase, the respite feels nicely earned for Five and Nyssa, too.

One of the best anthology releases in the monthly range. I've always liked this one a lot.
