Another one for the Index--this time a (glaringly?) notable omission: Spare Parts. Some relevant discussion: I know a lot of y'all really adore Spare Parts, for example, but for the life of me I just don't remember much of that story--and it's not like I listened to it very long ago. Just didn't leave much of an impression on me, I suppose. I like Spare Parts but it’s not a top listener for me either I enjoy Chimes but again not a Top Listener each of us are very varied but I think there is a fondness as there was No Tv Who at the time so people really enjoyed what BF gave them and boy looking at the MR count alone...they delivered in spades 😎 Yeah, definitely. I think maybe it also benefited for being relatively early in the MR run, so there was a lot less to compare it to (this is before Sandman, Jubilee, Live 34, and so many more) and it also featured a classic villain in a 'serious' story where they presented as a 'credible threat' -- which even today, looking at a much fuller body of work, is a bit of a rarity for the Cybermen. Like for all of the issues with the season finale last year, the preceding two episodes, with the mad cyberman, I found to be immensely satisfying--simply for being the first time in the new series where the Cybermen felt like an actual threat. So... what do you think? Does Spare Parts hold up as one of the best Doctor Who audio dramas of all time, or has it lost its luster?

I think it really holds up. Its just so full of foreboding that it really grabs me
and the family subplot is heartbreaking

I remember trying it and only getting 20mins or so through it before giving up.. but on the next go it blew me away.
It is a very visual story for me, I can picture it all in my head, and it is a slow descent in to the doom that is coming. 9 out of 10.

Very dark and grim. Nothing for you to listen to when you are in a dark mood, because it will throw you into the pit. Perfectly written, very atmospheric, goosebumps and mental anguish guaranteed. THIS is how the Cybermen should be written. They are utterly terrifying and horrific. And the inevitable ending is both heartbreaking and tragic.

Spare Parts starts slowly but it grows in to one of the finest, and chilling, Doctor Who stories ever written. It deserves it's reputation as one of the Main Range classic stories, as it really is.

An absolute classic. Possibly the best Cybermen story there is. It's legitimately terrifying and the atmosphere is one of the best realized in any Big Finish release.

It hasn’t been a total firm favourite with me but it’s been over a year since I listened so fresh ears....take me to a time there is No Doctor Who on telly my show has gone there’s books but I don’t really treat them in my mind as REAL Doctor Who and don’t like some of the directions they go in so I basically stop reading them the `Doctor Who Monthly is a thing of the past for me....so am back at that point as I listen...will BF be a worthy successor ....of course I know the answer but back then I didn’t

Still classic just finished it...Suitably dark and depressing as any origin story should be full of well...hopelessness 😂 I thin Sally is the standout performer especially as she pleads near the end then accepts her fate....and then......yes top notch Doctor Who

I only started listening to BF after the 50th Anniversary, so I wasn't one of the folks who heard this when there wasn't any DW on the tv. I didn't become a fan of DW until the new series started, so there is none of that clouding my judgement. It is one of the best Doctor Who stories ever made, IMO. That being said, I don't revisit it too frequently, although I do revisit it. That is because it is so well done that I can feel the hopelessness and horror of it, and I don't tend to want to feel that too often. It's a slow burn kind of horror, sucking you in before you realize how invested you are in the story and the central family and the situation that the planet is in. And what happens to the Doctor by the end...I remember being stunned by it the first time I heard it.
Sally Knyvette is wonderful. I came to Blakes 7 very late, a little over 2 years ago, so I was ignorant of her fan status the first few times I heard this. I thought that character was so well played and complex. And then on my last listen I was truly able to appreciate her in this role. (I adore Jenna Stanis and think Sally did, and does, a great job with that character.) Doctorman Allan is such a different character, and she is just fantastic in the role.

Its seeing it through the Hartley Family (their just an average Family trying to survive), and the Doctor's surrender to/ revolution of the inevitable that makes this a masterpiece of drama.

The 'imagery' and small touches also make this very classy: the Sisterman and Doctorman titles, the pay phone with the coin then the pips, the waves of sound when The Committee speaks, really well done and atmospheric.

It’s a masterpiece. The only small gripe I have is that sometimes the voice modulation of the Committee can be rather hard to make out.

Awesome! I liked how it touched on the Cybermen’s origins and got the Doctor involved, like with Genesis of the Daleks, but different.

It was no easy feat to do Genesis again, but with a different monster. Yet Platt managed to write a story equal to, probably, Classic Who's greatest serial. It's a masterclass of worldbuilding, characterisation and emotional gut punches.
