I don't have a mountain of Benny treads to make, don't worry. I just noticed while making the thread for 'Silver Lining' that we didn't have one for 'Oh No It Isn't!'
Which is odd, because I definitely remember talking about it here, but it must've been in another thread. Back when I first got into the Benny audios, I was very excitable, after all.
So, anyway... 'Oh No It Isn't' is the very first Benny audio drama. I think that also makes it the very first drama that Big Finish ever produced? You'd think this would mean that, in retrospect, it's not very good. But, wow, not only does it hold up well--it holds up very favorably. Lisa Bowerman takes to the role in her debut story like she's been playing Bernice Summerfield for years. It's ridiculously impressive.
And the story itself here is wildly imaginative, fast-paced and funny. It's so good I'd say it's absolutely essential listening for any Big Finish fan, regardless of how interested they are, or aren't, in further Benny audios. It's just that good. Delightful is the word, I think.
So, if any of y'all can remember, what did you think of 'Oh No It Isn't!' back when you first heard it? And if your opinion has changed, what do you think of it now?

Its a great story and so unexpected. Just seems so weird as the first story, it throws you when you go into the next stories

I could honestly wax lyrical about this one forever. And have. So I’ll spare you a repeat from me and say that I’d highly recommend it.

Before last year's Free DL my experience of this was during a wet afternoon on holiday in New quay listening to this and Beyond the Sun on a personal CD Player as somehow they were in the Hotel's lending Library shortly after their release.
As to Oh No It Isn't itself
Its a BOLD choice for a debut Audio. Nic Courtney Sells the Cat and it is a clever concept but you have to know the Subject matter Really well, and overall it didn't make me eager to continue with the series.

Regards mark687 What would you consider the necessary knowledge of the subject matter to be aware of? Do you mean the novels, or the whole theatrical style of pantomime in general? Because I found myself going in totally ignorant on every front, and still found it quite enjoyable. i can agree that it didn't exactly make me eager to move on to the next release, but in my case that was because it delivered on everything so well and so completely that I wasn't exactly left wanting more.

It was okay, but since I am missing the whole pantomime angle, it did not do a whole lot for me I am afraid...

Hello again.
As a fan of Bernice since her first appearance in Love and War, I was intrigued by the opportunity to hear the releases that started it all. Well, Nicholas Courtney as a cat was not something I was expecting but I took this as part of the comic trifle that is Oh no it isn't. It is a curious choice to start a brand new range. What it does in spades is show the invention, innovation and hutzpah of this new company. Comedy is a tricky beast, but I enjoyed the pure daftness of this. I also purchased the time ring series which was interesting blend of adventure and comedy with the notable exception of Just War which is an excellent adaptation of the Lance Parkin NA novel.

Not a big fan. It's a poor choice for an opener, because if you don't know Benny and her world, this story won't do much to help you. It's too strange - a first episode should establish what the series is going to be like in general, and then weirdness like this comes later. And that's exactly the situation I found myself in.
The other thing is pantomime. It was not a tradition I was familiar with, and while I did enjoy some of the humor, a lot of the...stylistic flourishes?...were kind of annoying.
3/5 for the poll - it's not awful in and of itself, but a poor debut story.

Have to agree. I adore the story itself but I wouldn’t have picked this for a debut story. Something like the Time Ring Trilogy might have been a better fit.

After putting it off for a long time (for one reason or another) I decided that I would give the range a go from the very beginning and this story is such a baffling and at times a frustrating one. Lisa Bowerman is really good but I think that this story would have worked better had it been either in the middle of the first series or a few series later on. Its worth listening to it again just to hear Nicholas Courtney act as a cat.
