The very first Short Trip, huh? Shouldn't be any good, right? But it is!
This is actually the second Short Trip I've listened to whose premise was lifted, wholesale, from a rather famous Star Trek story. In the other case, this was the the story's detriment--I won't go into specifics here, but in that case Big Finish failed to really take the idea in a new, unique or otherwise interesting direction. Here, however, I am very pleased to say that they did just that: taking the very same premise of Voyager's Blink of an Eye, and taking it in a different direction.
They even lampshade the Voyager episode, which I found nice. Why yes, writer whose name I never bothered to notice, I also really loved Blink of an Eye!
If you haven't watched that Star Trek Voyager episode, I heartily recommend you do so. It's just really good, solid SF, even if you're not fond of Trek in general or interested in watching anything else. Just a fun exploration of a cool idea.
But if you don't feel like doing so, and want some explanation... that's fair. The difference with Rise and Fall is that Blink of an Eye really only covers the rise (which is problematic in a way that's really only worth examination in a dense, r/DaystromInstitute thread, which I may or may not get to later) of this temporally-displaced civilization, whereas this story also depicts the fall. It's a much more somber and melancholy tale as a result. Showing that, in the fullness of time, all things end.
I'm not entirely sure it fits with the overall tone of the the 1st Doctor's stories (seems like a better fit for Tom Baker, I think) but it was a captivating story all the same. Easily a 5/5 Short Trip for me--not my favorite of the range (that's Forever Fallen, followed closely by Her Own Bootstraps), but right up there.
Anyone else grab these early Short Trips on sale? Or listen to 'em recently? If so, what did you think?
