In 1929, Lord Barset's expedition to the Antarctic is lost without trace. Or so it seems… Nearly a century later, his grandson funds a much-publicized return to the icy wastes. His mission: to discover what happened to the original expedition. But what he finds instead is an enigma – a battered London police box frozen in ice millennia old. But something else lies in wait in this awful place, something from an era before humankind set foot on the continent's cold soil. A menace frozen in time. Until now.
i really like this Cd and sometimes when I pick it up I tend to think of two enemies of the Doctor before I think nah it’s the other one lol. I always tend to enjoy 7 on his own and would enjoy more of them prior to his regeneration. It’s a good exciting script and again wonderful direction and soundscaping I think BF are expert at Antarctic environments 😂 a lot of snowy tales-well you can never have enough really.I don’t know why I don’t listen to this more

You know I love the mysterious ending and it would be great to explore where Genevieve (Maryam D’Abo) went with the Doctor before she rejoined her team given that she is very enthusiastic as to the story,a missed opportunity actually was just reading it must have been after this that she suffered a brain haemorrhage but completely recovered.

Again a great story where you're expecting one thing and then it turns another way

So this story has been on my radar for a bit because it's MR (so, cheap) and has a cool premise... but I've got to ask, does it have much of the "snow crunch" sfx? I really hate that sound... gives me goosebumps.

Wellp, here I am.
This was certainly... an interesting story. I'm definitely very keen on these post-Ace stories, and hope this is an area Big Finish explores more whenever they finally start pumping out 7DAs.
For the most part this is a fun monster story, with Ice Warriors, very fittingly. I don't have much to say about it other than an appreciation for the premise and timely-wimeyness of it all. Its biggest weakness is probably simply that it ultimately is just a "monster story," and abandons a very interesting premise far too early in order to get to the more generic evil-aliens-wanna-take-over-the-planet thing.
Imagine, for example, a slightly different version of this story, where the entire first episode is spent dealing with the unthawed Doctor--creepy and strange and impossible--who can't really remember anything; a second episode that plays into the mystery of the expedition and it's goals, with the Ice Warriors and their evil plans only coming into focus in the last two episodes.
Basically, imagine if this story focused more on the intrinsic weirdness of unthawing a several-centuries-old and very odd alien from the ice. Could've been a fantastic vehicle for some vague sinister Sylvester McCoy-style humor.
But, other than that, a fun romp. Again I find the 7th Doctor really works best by himself--fewer people to babysit! I also really liked the implication that the French(?) scientist woman may have traveled around with the Doctor for a bit before that last scene. Implied off-screen adventures are definitely one of the highlights of the TV show that Big Finish seldom emulates.

Still a great wee tale post MEl,Ace and Hex a Doctor without baggage.Somehow i find as i have said before a certain strength in Sylvester on his own solo travelling which Bf have done a few times now...and should do again.

"No?" We're saying the same thing here, though. Anyway, yeah, the solo stories tend to be really great. I do love Ace, but I think she works best separate from the Doctor (EG that's part of what made me love Dark Universe) -- she has really strong "main character energy" and just feels kind of wasted as a sidekick. Also the usual companion dynamic exists primarily as a vehicle for expository dialog, and I don't think that's something McCoy is especially skilled at delivering... and in general I think the 7th Doctor works best with minimal exposition. At least up until "the reveal."
