So It has Come.
Fate has determined that I should start the open Discussion on this warning sign for the Mr G Russell vision of new Doctor Who.
8th's debut Season starts so well Storm Warning is the perfect all round story, Sword of Orion is a great Action er, Venice a very good character piece, then there's this!
For some reason someone has decided that a new Doctor means new direction and the direction chosen here seems to be David Lynch meets Lovecraft and it does not work.
Nick Coutrney holds his head high and soldiers on though
Nick Briggs plays it too smarmy
There is the slightly ahead of its time allegory of a show boating, right-wing, women miss-treating US politician. However for all this I do have a morbid curiosity to hear the occasional mentioned 1st cut of this story.
Regards

While i enjoy it, it just feels that large parts of the story are missing (not surprising given the story was supposedly cut up AS they were recording) and the US Accents dont quite ring true

The hallmarks of this originally being a fan production are all over this. Has some really weird character choices, the random Buffy the Vampire Slayer pastiche for one thing, and it’s the closest thing we’ll get after all to an adventure where the Doctor has to defeat Yosemite Sam. But, in saying that, I could never call it boring. And I really dig the flippancy of the ‘Demons’ we meet in the story.
So, I tend to take the approach that it’s so bad, it’s sort of brilliant.

I've warmed to Minuet in Hell, and these days I really enjoy it!

You know, I’d almost go so far as to say everyone should listen to this one at least once. If only to say you’ve experienced it.
Certainly don’t think we’d get a story like this now from Big Finish.

Honestly i don’t know if this is so bad its good or just crazy enough to be good but i love this one. The doctor and the brig are great with some good chemistry (i know people wanted to see more of them when the doctors sane but i think this works. Charley is also great in some actual danger. The bad American accents are, well, bad. But they're great fun! I probably did enjoy it in a so bad its good kinda of way but i don’t know, i do find a lot of genuine from this story (certainly so much more than spectre of lanyon moore which i just find dull.) Again though i can see why it would drag some people up the wrong way.

Minuet in Hell was probably the first Big Finish release that I thought was dodgy. I got got confused listening to it back then and it was a mile away from the basic Doctor Who stories that we had been getting each month from Big Finish. Minuet in Hell is full of indulgences and I'm sure if Gary Russell revisited the script today he'd make tons of changes, including the casting!!!
However, after the sometimes bland by-the-numbers stuff we can get from BF today, to keep the BBC happy that Doctor Who is family friendly and accessible to all ages of course, I do appreciate Minuet in Hell for being a brave attempt at doing something very different and taking risks with the blank canvas that the Eighth Doctor had back then for Gary Russell to play with. The script probably wouldn't have got approved if Doctor Who had been back on the TV at that stage as it most certainly took the Doctor - and his companion - in a new direction! In retrospect though I do kind of enjoy Minuet in Hell, it's still not the greatest Doctor Who story but it is something different.

I really enjoy this one. It's a big, sprawling, end-of-series epic - and it has the Brigadier! Of the first McGann series, I'd rate it second behind Sword of Orion. It's overlong, meanders in places, but features a great villain and is great fun to listen to.
