If I was a 59 year year old man with decades of writing experience I would simply not have a hissy fit in response to somebody giving a mildly negative review of some of my work. R.I.P. to Nick Briggs but I'm different. Am 55 been known to have a hissy fit 😂

They've changed the Review its far more Polite now and They've apologized! Regards mark687 I read it didn’t think it was a very harsh review at all...see if everyone had just gone out had a double whopper bacon and cheese the world would be a better place😂 anyways am still liking the actual audio in fact I would say it’s a great script and it’s Definitely within my terms of a Doctor Who script lol I mean everyone tends to love Stranded and I don’t think much of that but am no reviewer 😂 and even if John Dorney or Matt would buy me ten bottles of Bruichaladdich 10 year old heavily peated am still not gonna change my mind 😂 but they can feel free to try😂

They've changed the Review its far more Polite now and They've apologized! Just goes to show why reading reviews are a waste of time. Judge everything for yourself. All we're gonna get now is "excellent audio", "brilliant", "best thing BF have ever done", etc. as anything less will upset Nick. So what's the point then? A review should be honest in it's appraisal, good or bad, and not be done with an agenda to keep anyone happy.

R.I.P. to Nick Briggs but I'm different. Literally one of the first things I was taught (EDIT: in J-School, but I think it's equally applicable to every field) was to never, never, never engage with your critics. Your work will either stand on its own, or it won't, and once it's out in the world you can't do anything about it. And ive yet to encounter anything to persuade me that this is an incorrect approach--and ample evidence that it's not. .... And while I haven't read this review, the bits quoted by The Brigadier are perhaps more acerbic than necessary, but they're nowhere near invalid criticism. Or even especially harsh criticism. Definitely not worth throwing a stink over.

I listened to this yesterday and genuinely, I didn't realise Nick was playing all the roles he had been. In fact as I rarely read the cast lists, other than the reviews I would have assumed he was just doing Daleks and the Captain.
Yes some of it could be viewed as a love letter to what makes Nick tick, the so called vanity project. I wish he'd be more experimental like some of his earlier work.
I've been very critical of him in the past and the things he is oft slated for do still permeate this release (Director, writer, actor, etc).
Taking him out of it, did I enjoy it? Yes I did, its a good average story. I think they should have stayed on exillon, dealt with Anya better, been more cognizant of some of the scripting before the actors performed it, and done a lot more with the daleks but it is a good 7/10.
Having read the review, I think I would have reacted similar, someone critiqued my work in a generic negative way as this person did Nicks, and it hurt as they hadn't bothered to engage with me properly to understand it (was a network design, that's my trade), they just rejected it in a few nasty sentences. I reached out to them to make things better and see their point of view, to improve their understanding. I could have not bothered, but I care to much.
We all know what it is like to read something attacking our opinion or work, some of us turn into emotional keyboard warriors, or take a severe confidence knock, leave a job or relationship or ignore it. How you deal with your own reaction to the negative is what counts, its not always easy to ignore negativity toward you, so I can understand Nick kicking off, but he should have responded better or not responded at all, or even asked what would people like to see from him in the future.
We learn, we grow, we make mistakes, we try to do better, and that's all we can do.

I just was in Facebook and read the epic comment battle between Nick and one of the reviewers on there. So some reviewer gave a less favourable review and Nick... objected. I have not listened to this yet, but from what everybody writes here, this cannot be too bad... Oh I love it when Nick loses it with Reviewers it is on the main BF FB Page? This time he would be justified IMO I should add. Regards mark687 Nah, it was on the Facebook group Big Finish Audio which is partially affiliated with BF from what I can tell.
Wow, so I was away for half a day and my lazy comment caused 2 pages of heated discussion.....

It's a pity, as the two pages of "discussion" have detracted from what is actually a good story... and even the review in question gave The Dalek Protocol a 7/10 rating, so it's all a storm in a tea cup really.

A 7 out of 10 should be at least 'very good' or 'good', as it is way above average and not too far off the top mark of 10. So I'm not sure that the reviewer, with their comments on what they claim is a bog standard story, understands that fundamental bit.

I know someone who considers 6/10 a rating for a 'bad' story, even though it's actually above average. (Which logic would say is 5/10.) People rate in different ways. Bog standard = 7/10 <shrugs>
