Two and a half months in, it's already interesting to look at what we were looking forward to. I mentioned High Rise in my post above and I was lucky enough to go to a screening of it 2 weeks ago with Ben Wheatley introducing it and doing a Q&A afterwards. It's a really, really great film. It's every bit as odd and as off the wall as the Ballard book. It won't be for everyone but I doubt anyone will be on the fence over it. I chanced my arm and took my Wheatley blurays along and in the bar afterwards he was kind enough to sign all of them - Down Terrace, Kill List, A Field In England and Sightseers. I should have taken Doctor Who Series 8 as well, I guess, since he directed Deep Breath and Into The Dalek! Cherished films all of them - he's the best British director of the past few decades for my money. Up there with Lynn Ramsay and Danny Boyle.
The others I mentioned...well, Spotlight was great of course (though I don't think anyone thought it would beat The Revenant to the Oscar) and Dad's Army was....well...it had a great casting director. That's about it!
Still loads to look forward to but I think my most anticipated release this year is an archive release - the BFI's Alan Clarke 13-disc bluray retrospective. Will be a real treasure trove for a director who is up there with Bill Forsyth and Nic Roeg as my favourite of his generation.
