That’s a really great choice for Abner Brown and one I must admit I didn’t expect.

What a strange time to release it
Is that a female playing Peter? Lizzie Waterworth-Santo (Peter Jones), bit odd?

What a strange time to release it Is that a female playing Peter? Lizzie Waterworth-Santo (Peter Jones), bit odd? Well..either Big Finish are recognising the one hundred and forty third anniversary of the birth of John Masefield in June...or bringing the date forward might generate more sales on the limited CD print run. (I'm certainly going to have to change my buying plans!) As for Lizzie, she is (or was?) the voice of Horrid Henry in the cartoon series, so ideally suited as the voice of Peter. Mind you, if you think her casting is a bit odd then you'd better sit down while I break some news to you about the voice of Bart Simpson....

That is a HUGE cast for a Big Finish, isn't it? Suppose it's six hours but wow!

September was a fairly odd release date anyway. Now, if it had been brought forward from *December*, I should have said that maybe BF had sold it to Radio 4 for Christmas. But if it's only been brought forward 3 months rather than 6, I suspect it's just one of those strange BF things where they bring things forward for some reason.

Perhaps Big Finish have sold it to BBC Radio 4 for broadcasting over Christmas, so have bought the release forward.

How to compel me to pre-order: say there’s only 1000 copies on CD! For all I know something like this may only get 50 pre-orders. It may take years to sell out. Can’t take that chance though so it’s an instant order from me. The other reason is I very fondly recall watching that as a child. Have since got the DVD but never got round to watching it yet. 2020 and 2021 are the years I went all download and the thing I want to know from BF is what kind of packaging they are using for this. If it’s the deluxe packaging they have used in the past, such as with Masterful, then I would be tempted to order a physical release.

I mean there is a lot of nostalgia for the ‘84 BBC production of The Box of Delights so it could sell rather well on the basis of that alone.

I'm sitting here almost as far from any Christmas as it's possible to be (mid June) humming Hely-Hutchinson's 'Carol Symphony' with a big silly grin on my face!
BF have certainly made my day - the part of the symphony he based on 'The First Nowell' has been in my head every time I've thought of this release since the moment it was announced; that tune IS 'The Box of Delights'.
