I was quite surprised when it didn't come out on the 24th or 25th. I thought maybe releasing it six months from Christmas would give them a hook to hang it on that doesn't otherwise exist in midsummer.

I've got no intention of listening to this in the middle of Summer...it's a truly classic Christmas tale. What an odd decision to release it at this time. I'm sure there's a reason internally but it's a festive fave.
Just hearing the theme when I put the DVDs on each December gives me the feels of the season.

well i have to say i am a few hours in and have to say i am afraid i am really disappointed the jones children's voices sound like they from an 80's dubbed cartoon they terrible and spoil the whole thing peter and Maria are especially bad......
but production as a whole is not bad, but not got the wow! i was hoping for
2.5 hours left to go hope it changes my mine, just my initial thoughts

I'm sure there's a reason internally but it's a festive fave. Just hearing the theme when I put the DVDs on each December gives me the feels of the season. I almost wonder if, as I’ve said before, it’s because they have other festive releases planned for December and as such bumped this release up the schedules a bit.

I've listened to the preview in the podcast out of curiosity (as other posters have said, this is definitely to be kept for December!) and while lots of the surrounding characters are good, Jacobi as Hawlings is a bit route 1 twinkly old man. It's not a bad performance, it's just got less hard edges and interesting choices than I was hoping for. I've probably been spoiled by Troughton in the role.

i am sorry everyone involved but this box does not delight this listener
i will start by saying its not terrible, in fact many will love it, i am sure. But its predecessors shadow looms large and this just doesn't just reach their heights.
my biggest gripe is the casting especially with the children.......peter is awful! silly cartoon voice, Maria too is a over exaggerated silly voice and sound nothing like real children and for a story that has the children take centre stage for most of the tale its a big miss. i understand the problems around casting children and laws but for what is a serious drama, cartoon voice actors putting on silly voices just don't cut it.
the rest of the cast is ok, no one shines no one is truly terrible.....but this is where its predecessors casts its long shadow, it for me just felt that no one is as good as what came before.
listening now to it twice the decision to split it up into little chapters and have the theme music to close and start each chapter was a mistake, 4 parts would have been more than enough. after 20 times then 20 more it got increasingly annoying as it went on.........as much as i think its the perfect music you don't need to hear it that much.......
also coming in at over an hour longer than other versions what extra was there? nothing for me that needed the extra length.
so i gave it a good chance, but the magic just didn't fire for me, it was just not worth the money. A rare misfire for the big finish guys released at wrong time, with wrong cast and at the wrong price...........
i would struggle to give it more that a 4/10, it will not replace the others 1966, 1995 or the 80's tv version for my next xmas listen/watch in fact i doubt i will listen to it again......
i really am sorry that all the hard work just fell flat, ambitious releases like this are to be applauded but some times they just don't work.

Wow! I'm surprised this hasn't been well received. I was on the fence for a while and then cracked a few days after it was released. The TV series was a slow burner after watching it at a friend's house a few years ago but it has grown on me over the years - of course the Troughton would be a hard act to follow and Jacobi doesn't quite hit the mark but comes pretty damn close in my opinion. There's a lot of menace in his performance as well as kindly old man; Hawlings is quite happy to put Kay and co in mortal peril for the sake of the box after all.
It's hard not to compare and contrast. On one half I find Robert Stephens a bit hard to take in the TV version and Gatiss underplays the role nicely, although, just to be contrary, Louise Jameson underplays Miss Pouncer a little too much where as Patricia Quinn is a star in the TV version! Lisa Bowerman was born to play Caroline Louisa and Mina Anwar was fun as Ellen, the maid. Mack Keith-Roach shone as Kay and was easily the star of the show for me. I didn't mind Lizzie Waterworth-Santo as Peter, although she did sound like Sophie Aldred on occasion, which took me out of the story a little. As for Maria; if she's ever played by someone who isn't annoying they are doing it wrong!!
As for the ten part version, I think it dragged a little towards the end and could possibly have gotten away with being an episode shorter. Part nine in particular feels short and forced in a little. But minor gripes really. An entertaining production that I will listen to again I'm sure. And I loathe Christmas usually!

I adored this, and it was my intro to the story. I think the entire cast was superb, and while I would have cut it down to 4 hours instead of 5, I still enjoyed it throughout!

I’m really not sure when I’ll listen to this. It is far, far too summery now, and my husband would feel the same, who’ll be listening to it with me. Maybe in colder autumn, though again that might impact our annual rewatch of the TV series in November/December. I do find it a truly bizarre time of year to release it. Especially for what is a costly box trying to appeal to not the usual Big Finish customers. Many of whom will be wondering where their CDs are too.

Big Finish sell their stuff exclusively through the website for two months don't they? Maybe they released it in summer so that it would go on wider in the autumn and reach that more general audience at a more appropriate time. (It still feels very strange to be promoting it in June though, don't get me wrong)

I get the impression its going to be on the radio come the season... Any reason to think this beyond us speculating? Because if it does get broadcast this year, there will be mightily cheesed-off purchasers

Because if it does get broadcast this year, there will be mightily cheesed-off purchasers Just putting two and two together to make five. As what I said, the structure and editing, the timing of the early release, plus its being moved forward, invites speculation as to the whys and wherefores. But yes, not everyone might share the amusement if that proves the case. Have you bought it yet?

Because if it does get broadcast this year, there will be mightily cheesed-off purchasers I don't know about broadcast but it turns out its only going to be an exclusive purchase from the BF site until July 31st (presumably that means the DL version will be available from other sites from August 1st as there's only supposed to be 1000 CDs pressed.)
