The January 2000 release (number 4) is next on the listening list. Landing in Alaska, the Doctor and Nyssa encounter a group of people in a most unusual house, cut off not only by the harsh climate but by their individual secrets and obsessions.
Millionaire Shaun Brett is utilising chunks of the local area to construct a shrine to his dead father. But when deadly creatures start roaming outside, and a terrifying discovery is made inside the house, the Doctor realises that Brett has unleashed an unimaginably ancient force.Well there was a lot of talking in this one, seemingly endless dialogue scenes. Would have probably been better at about half the time. The characters were all unlikeable & the threat was a bit silly, a failed attempt to capture the tone of HP Lovecraft and The Thing.

Only thing that bothered me was that BF were clearly still getting their heads around how to tell a story by audio - some of the telephone scenes were ridiculous - "hang on a moment Doctor, I'm being threatened by this hideous monster but I'll stand here describing it to you for a bit so that you know in detail what's going on" Actually, we can get some similar scenes these days as well - I seem to remember the first War Doctor set had a ridiculously long piece of exposition just as the daleks were supposed to be shooting someone - did they really just hand around for a few minutes admiring the Doctor's gravelly vocals before proceeding with the exterminate order?

I think the Daleks must love the Doctor's voice(s). Like they hate the Doctor but whenever the Doc speaks they go "gosh what a lovely timbre; I'd listen to him read the phone book..." It's the only reason I can imagine why they let them jabber on so much.

2. Phantasmagoria
I really struggled to get into this one. Lot of people standing around talking and not actually trying to investigate anything. For example Turlough spends most of Part 2 wishing the Doctor was there to do something. The twist at the Part 3 cliffhanger was neat, but didn’t really get explored at all (wanting vengeance for the death of her parents isn’t exactly an original motivation). Just a symptom of the early days I guess, but quite a sub part solo debut for Five.

Ah the 1st Swap/Fill in Fearmonger was running behind schedule and this was written and Recorded in something like 3/4 weeks and its kinda more short story prose the Audio Drama I think. 3. Whispers of Terror
Now that’s more like it. Sixie’s proper debut kicks the range into full throttle, with a great concept.

Not that keen on Land of the Dead - think it's awful, but Phatasmagoria was quite good.

3. Whispers of TerrorNow that’s more like it. Sixie’s proper debut kicks the range into full throttle, with a great concept. I really think this is a good one. Sixie is great in this but in a way that makes you *like* the character. Baker plays Sixie as he should have been. Considering how rotten Baker was treated by the BBC, he effortlessly slips back into the role and gives it his all. Real respect to Colin and it just shows how much he loves the role and what a great Doctor he would have been had he been given a decent crack at the whip. Interestingly, I didn't realise that the viewing figures for Season 22 were significantly better than those of Season 20 or Season 21. Just shows that BBC politics did for Sixie more than anything else. Real shame.

Ok folks. I'm jumping on board. Sirens Of Time, here I come! (I always have a hard time finishing this one when I re-listen to it. Not sure why. It's not bad, but I feel like it's better as an interesting example of how BF started than an actual good story worth listening to. Although Maggie Stables is really great in it.)
