I'm in the middle of The Marian Conspiracy. The gamechanger of the early days. I've heard it many times, but not for a quite a while. I am now only 3 years younger than Evelyn is in this one, and all they keep talking about is how old she is. She's not that old!!!! (LOL) how old is Evelyn supposed to be.......I always saw her in her late 60's early 70's sure you no where near that. That's how I imagine her. I always saw her as being quite similar to Professor Rumford (my favourite 'should-have-been-a-companion' character).

This thread's got me to go back and revisit some of the artwork from Real Time (circa 2003) and, yep, the shoe definitely fits...

Sorry incorrect Evelyn was designed as an older companion and I think Maggie was 1st choice Casting Regards mark687 Yes, I think Evelyn was created with Maggie Stables in mind. Wasn't she appearing in a stage play with Nick Briggs? I'm sure I've heard this mentioned somewhere but can't remember where or any details. If only they'd had interview tracks on those early stories to give us the background information! (And to say how great the lunches always were, of course. )
Anyway, I can't imagine anyone except Maggie Stables playing Evelyn. Just wonderful.
How dare you imply, accidentally or not, that I don't have the absolute highest regard for Maggie Stables. What's the best emoticon for existential shock? Please imagine that here. O__O Anyway, I always pictured Evelyn as being in her 50s or 60s (probably closer to the latter) when she started traveling with the Doctor, since she was still actively teaching. I tried to look it up, but her year of birth isn't listed on the TARDIS wiki, Wikipedia, or IMDb. So... I'd assume she was in her 80s when she passed, which would put her in her 70s when she was first cast, but that's a total guess on all fronts.

5th release The Fearmonger (February 2000). Very interesting story but overlong, still finding their feet in how to best describe events via audio (use of the radio DJ to explain things). Sophie Aldred was very good, the strongest companion performance so far but of course I had to endure Sylvester McCoy. Yes, there's the infamous scene where the Doctor is 'on the phone' and describes everything to the audience that way. I put it down to the scripting process finding its feet. There is a lot of 'talking' in this one. With some editing here and there, it would have been far stronger - Live34 is probably the best example of this.

If I recall, there were also problems with delivering this - hence why it was put out in February 2000 and the need to put together something rapidly for Davison in the Land of the Dead.

That just blew me away. If I remember from DWM at the time, the idea was to deliberately give Sixie an older companion as BF thought this would have been better for his more pompous Doctor as they would be abler to rebut/puncture his ego more effectively. As a result, Evelyn was deliberately envisaged as an older companion, intellectual and able to stand on her own two feet. Her retirement would have been commensurate with the policy that many universities at the time wanted to get rid of salaried staff as they were expensive and had generally better conditions of employment. Although the retirement age (there still was one) was around 60-65 for academics, lots of universities wanted to get rid of older, more expensive staff (despite raking in tuition fees).

Time for the 6th release, The Marian Conspiracy (March 2000). Probably the release where everything fitted together - BF are firing on all cylinders here. Baker and Stables shine in this. I also like that they go back to the Tudor period but ignore the 'old favourites' of Henry VIII or Elizabeth I. Thoughtful and well delivered.

The Fearmonger conceived as a worst case scenario now an excellently accurate dire phosphoric warning

Time for the 6th release, The Marian Conspiracy (March 2000). This for me is where Big Finish starts, a completely original companion & while not perfect a real sense of growing confidence that was lacking up to now. Evelyn is of course great but I agree with others about the obsession with her age here when she is 55. I still imagine her being at least 10 years older.
