In an old version of BF's FAQ, they explained why they used the 70s version of the theme tune for all of their Doctors to begin with: We initially commissioned four new versions and although they are all great reinterpretations, I still believe that to most people, the Pertwee/Baker theme *is* Doctor Who.Have any of those "four new versions" ever seen the light of day? I've always liked their bass-heavy Eighth Doctor theme.

I dont like the one they did use for The Silver Turk and that run of 8th Doctor stories. Was that a nu-who one?
I like the sparse retro original version.

Oof! I just listened to the theme on Silver Turk and it's not for me. Still, it's only a minute or so which I can easily skip over.
The one I mentioned liking is on at least: some of his Monthly/Main Range stories, (I've checked Storm Warning and Chimes of Midnight), series 1 of the EDAs, and Dark Eyes 1.
He had another theme for some EDAs which was like a DJ having fun with the 70s version.
I e-mailed BF about the “four new versions”, and my question was passed on to Nick Briggs himself! Sadly, it seems they were never released and have been “lost in time”.

I wasn't personally keen on the Silver Turk arrangement of the theme, but I loved how it tried something "new" and followed the arrangement of the TV Movie (the buildup leading into the middle-8 section before rocking out with the main melody).

Is liking the Silver Turk theme an unpopular opinion?? Cause I think it's fantastic!
Anyway it's interesting that they considered remixing the theme for the Fifth through Seventh Doctors... Do we know why they couldn't use the proper themes until 2003? (Or did they just not want to?)

Do we know why they couldn't use the proper themes until 2003? (Or did they just not want to?) A bit of both. Here's that full answer from their old FAQ: “8. Why do you use that particular version of the Doctor Who theme?
My preference, more than anything. We initially commissioned four new versions and although they are all great reinterpretations, I still believe that to most people, the Pertwee/Baker theme *is* Doctor Who. When the Comic Relief team used it for The Curse of Fatal Death last March, that finally swung it for me.
And we were fortunate to be aided by Mark Ayres who had prepared the special stereo short mixes for the charity special and that's the version we use. And for those who wonder why we use so little of it, well, that's straightforward, ugly old economics I'm afraid.
We have to pay the copyright holders a percentage per second's worth used. It's not cheap and therefore we use what we can afford. A number of people have suggested that we use the different themes for each Doctor but that gets us further into the red!
Not only do we still have to pay the copyright on the piece of music itself, but those individual re-arrangers would need to be paid each time too. Honestly, we simply cannot afford it.
And, as I say, I believe the theme we do use is the one most closely associated with Doctor Who to a majority of people.”Evidently around 2003 was when they started making enough money and/or feeling strongly enough to start using era-appropriate themes per Doctor.

Always thought that was a strange creative choice myself when it came to the use of theme tunes but reading that I now agree completely. Saying that though, I am pleased they eventually shifted to era appropriate themes.

I Remember The 2001 David Arnold Version was more magical (the version used in Storm Warning and The Stones of Venice i wish they had stuck with that
