The box set numbering in the announcement is interesting - apologies if this point has been made upthread, I haven't read it all 3rd Doc releases are vols 1 & 2 - not 9 & 10 as might have been expected following from 7 & 8 this year. Are we to read anything into this? 4rth Dr releases continue the previous numbering, i.e series 11. Docs 2, 5, 6, 7 8 all begin with vol 1 which is as expected since they are all starting new things. The first doc adventures are not vol 6 as might be expected if they were continuing with David Bradley, but nor are they vol 1 as might be expected if there was a new actor playing the first Doc Ties in with the vague "ideal jumping points or "new direction" comments Nick makes every now and then. I suspect they’ll emphasise subtitles more than numbers and the range will effectively soft reboot every year or two, depending on plans for that particular Doctor.
Personally I’m looking more at the “2022” numbering than I am the reset back to Volumes 1 & 2, as I think that’s more telling.

I don't think it'll necessarily be a 'reboot' every year - my guess is there'll just be a new storyline each year, Forty being the first of these for the Fith Doctor, for example.
But I think there might still be ongoing narratives throughout multiple years, it's just that each year will have its own arc.

A bit like Dark eyes, doom coalition, ravenous and stranded are all jumping on points (to varying degrees) but still are a continuing narrative

So I bit the bullet and in a fit of enthusiasm pre-ordered the 8th and 6th Doctor bundle. Just because I know I will get them eventually anyways. And their stories in the past were at least good average (at least most of them). And honestly, even Colin reading the telephone book would be worthwhile.

Amid all this talk about bundles and such, I just have one thing to say:
I miss ranges with monthly releases terribly.

Yeah, most definitely. And there was an odd comfort knowing that there would be certain releases out without having to look it up. Knowing that the last release you are waiting for was a Short Trip coming out the last few days of the month. That there would be a 5th, 6th or 7th Doctor story coming like clockwork, no matter what else you were or weren't waiting for. These were my friends, comforts when life was stressful or just boring and tedious. I miss them.

I think I miss the Short Trips a bit more than the monthly range, the stories told in box sets aren't that different to the main range (adjusting for the feel of each doctor) but the short trips were often more unusual.

Where have you heard about Torchwood becoming boxsets? I think it's the least likely range to transfer to boxsets, because of the stories only being an hour and usually having a very small cast.

As it’s the only range not to have transitioned from regular releases to boxsets, its not an unreasonable assumption that Torchwood will one day join the ranks of the boxsets. Feels more of a when, not an if.

It does make me worry about the state of big Finish if the short trips (which are download only) are getting Boxset only due to saving on costs (probably the individual covers) which makes me think if big Finish cannot afford to have 12 individual covers a year

If that is the case it would have been preferred, if Big Finish would have built in the functionality of individually releasing all of those 6 included stories each month (much like they did with the weekly Dark Shadows: Bloodlust and Bloodline included stories) prior to the official date of its entire Volume 11 release. I think that would have made Big Finish more upfront money and retained appeal with monthly subscribers of the Short Trips range. I can see some previous buyers possibly walking away from their current what seems to be an unimaginative batch only release strategy. As for lowering the manufacture cost of individual covers, Big Finish could have done what they do with their Blake's 7 audiobook covers (or did with Bloodlust and Bloodline model) - always using the same decorative image and only changing the text.

Interesting that you mention “unimaginative” there. I find the Short Trips have become mostly unimaginative, with the same names cropping up and the move to sets is a prime opportunity to address that. The content has halved, so use that to focus on new and exciting readers telling some weird and wonderful stories. The sheer variety is what the Short Trips are known and loved for; more of that, please.

I gave up on the Short Trips with the move to a box set, in part as the stories over the last year or so haven't really stood out. As stated elsewhere, I am considering not getting these replacements for the monthly range. Nothing in the few details is making me feel these are must buys. More and more I feel myself moving from a pre-order to waiting for sales and only getting the stuff that grabs my attention. Of late there has been a few items I have pre-ordered which just fell flat and weren't worth the money. This has left me feeling that perhaps BF is overdoing the DW spinoffs and stretching themselves a little thin as a result.

However, sticking with the 3rd Doctor, one thing that seems to have slipped below the DU's radar is Nick's comment in the news story:
"I’m particularly excited by what we’ll be doing with new First, Second and Third Doctor Adventures, aiming to make take them into brand new territory" ["make take" not a typo on my part, that is in the original news story]
New territory for Two is obvious enough - 6B. As for One, it is likely to mean the gap between Savages and War Machines that has not been explored before on audio. But what about new territory for Three? A new companion in the gap between seasons 7 and 8 or between season 10 and 11 is the most obvious new territory that springs to mind for me.
Anyone else have any thoughts?

I’d imagine they will do as you said and introduce a new companion between season 10 and 11. Only other gap I can think of is say a series of adventures set during his attempts to get home during Planet of the Spiders where he is slowly dying from radiation. Although, that’s not really something I’d be interested in myself.
