I agree, this is getting ridiculous. Perhaps it has gone beynd ridiculous. Perhaps I'm extra grumpy because I don't feel the best currently, but it's more because I pre-ordered this because we hadn't heard from the 2nd Doctor in an age, and I thought we'd be getting something a bit different; but no. More Nick Briggs as the voice of the Daleks, and Ice Warriors too - the most interesting thing there is it seems to be Mark Elstob doing the voices - but don't worry, Nick's The Cybermen in the long awaited Sylvester set (no, I'm not a Briggs basher, blah blah, love Sherlock, blah blah, he's good at what he does) ... but really, is this how every set is going to be now? The return of this or that, or X meets Y, often featuring The Brigadier. I just wish BF used the character more when Nicholas Courtney was around.
Yes, nostalgia sells, but not in virtually every story.
Be good if they addressed this trend and used it as a story opportunity to show why every character seems to bump into every other character at this point. Say, maybe the universe is slowly constricting so Time and Space are made more compact or something. Explaining why the likes of Charley Pollard can bump into Frobisher etc. Another good concept. This is a title I had been eagerly waiting for more details on.
I had expected it might feature some returning characters and villains, but I had expected them to be more of the Time Lord variety…
An unknown version of the Master turns out to be the Doctor’s “handler”.
The Doctor going on missions with rookie agents like Narvin and Ollistra.
And finding himself in opposition to the Monk, but knowing that he is the one in the wrong.
Oh well…let’s have some Daleks instead.

I admit that I’m not too keen on the idea of a new era being very continuity filled, near fan-jodrell(though I dislike the term). After The Outlaws being such a fresh and very limited connection to other who Elements, I was hopeful this would follow suit. Ice Warriors by themselves would have been fine, and having Tim Treloar and Katy Manning as new roles is fun, but I might wait for volume 2’s details before I buy that.

I will say that seeing 8 episodes is exciting, as it looks like episodes will be at the 22 minute mark as opposed to the sometimes 40 minute episodes stories can have at Big Finish

Its bound to stand out to me more I suppose but another Scottish set story. Eccleston has had one in 3 back-to-back boxsets. Is there a chance Moffat has infiltated BF? Or is it a ploy to keep Tennant and Gomez happy and lure Capaldi?

A golden opportunity to develop the character in new directions free from being beholden to the TV show's status quo. And Narvin just seems like a no-brainer, right? Hell, he should be the Doctor's new companion here... a rookie CIA handler who tries to stay behind on the TARDIS while sending the Doctor out to do... things.

I wonder if Two is going to utter the line said by Five in his post regeneration confusion in Castrovalva - "This way Brigadier, if the Ice Warriors don't get there first"?

I've been purely digital for years so it doesn't make much difference to me but they seem to have just given up completely on covers now.

I've been purely digital for years so it doesn't make much difference to me but they seem to have just given up completely on covers now. This is completely wrong. Do I think the Beyond War Games cover is a little bland? Yes. But to say that BF have given up on covers is completely wrong. Sean Longmore's work for the 3DAs and the Torchwood range, Caroline Tankersley's work on the 7DAs, the 9DAs, and a lot of the new series stuff, and Ryan Aplin's work on the 4th and 5th Doctor adventures are evidence (if any is needed) that, if anything, BF are putting more focus on their covers. These three artists are probably my favourites at the moment, and while I think that the painted approach is getting a little stale, Claudia Gironi has put so much work into them, and I think they really suit the Audio Novels and the War Doctor range.

I think that cover is rather neat. Pitches this as a transition between the 60s and the onset of colour of 70s.

Much like with The Outlaws, it’s a bit generic and doesn’t really show you anything about the stories, but I think the colour helps it pop a bit more.

Big Finish Team: Hey we got a Boxset with The Second Doctor, The Brigadier, The Daleks And Ice Warriors this release should get a lot of attention with customers
Me: Well that’s cool should you guys put it on the cover to drum up investment and excitement for the first ever second doctor adventures Boxset
Big Finish Team: Nope we are just going to an artist have a picture of Troughton from the title sequence add a bit of colour and then put a filter on the front to make it look like it’s a watercolour painting like the other releases
Me: ……
To be fair it’s better then the first Doctor outlaws cover which was utterly awful but yeah this cover art is not something I would have considered doing especially for an important release

Just gonna say this without even looking at the responses to the cover yet: leave the artist alone, I somehow doubt that she was the one who explicitly decided to make these two covers just the Doctors. She did a great job, also. That said, while I actually like the 1DA cover, I just don't like this one. It has a feeling to it that I kind of enjoy and with time I might just be able to enjoy it properly, but I don't think I'll ever like it. The 1DA cover is better IMHO. Still, respect the artist. Also: I love that they're still pretending like there isn't going to be a 3 and Jo cameo AT LEAST if not them properly featuring in story 2.

I doubt even the person who created it would take it that personal to quote their shouty rant to add a fresh one on top. If someone is incorrect, still says the same stuff anyway....just move on. You wont make inroads losing the head.

At the end of the day, opinions are opinions. Some like the art style, some don’t. I do, but the Beyond War Games cover doesn’t do a great deal for me. They’ve chucked the kitchen sink in the set, so you’d have thought they’d advertise them.
I said the other day that I don’t doubt the paint and watercolour-esque covers take a lot of time to do, but ultimately the end product does look like well used promo photos aligned with a filter on top. It’s hard to escape that, and that will naturally influence people’s opinions. I
Contrast that to Dead Plates shared above. I love Sean Longmore’s work, and although that cover doesn’t quite work for me, I can see the effort that’s gone into it. I just can’t look past CGI elements on the body, a head that clearly doesn’t fit and then flipped so looks even stranger.
