I am looking forward to this for the simple reasons I love the 2nd Doctor and there is a definite lack of full cast audios featuring 2.

Yeah, the 2nd Doctor is awesome and woefully underrepresented. The 6DAs are just inherently exciting, regardless of how the stories or sets are premised. Re: artwork... for some people, but coming into this hobby relatively recently I find the affect of artwork a bit of a mixed bag. Many of the best releases are fairly old and, frankly, have pretty bad cover art. Meanwhile there are plenty of new releases with great cover art and underwhelming stories... if you're just getting into Big Finish, maybe you'll find enticing cover art effective, but I imagine anyone who sticks with the audios will kick that habit pretty quickly. Honestly it’s hard to know how successful the Boxset will be. I mean it’s got Daleks, ice warriors and the brigadier so that would interest people The only thing I can see getting in the way is the bland artwork which doesn’t showcase any of the returning elements which yeah could see casual viewers who are unsure of the release to perhaps dip out. lol, I had such low expectations for Dalek Universe. "Oh great," I thought. "More shouty boys and generic invasion plots."

Absolutely The amount of times I’ve bought big finish release because Of the artwork alone is numerous also the only reason I bought the 8th of March Vol 2 crap was because of the artwork

Curious if this was recorded first before the 3rd Doctor Boxset As The impression is very hit and miss

Impression may not be super accurate but I like the performance. Feels very Troughton-ish to me.

Impression may not be super accurate but I like the performance. Feels very Troughton-ish to me. Agreed. I’m not interested in a inflection for inflection impression, I’m interested in a performance that captures the essence of the actor’s take on the character. Most people are not Jon Culshaw who can do both.

Sure, it’s not a perfect impersonation. But it does it for me.

I thought that was pretty good actually. I was 50/50 after The Annihilators but I decided I'd take a chance on this boxset. I'm glad I did as in this clip, he actually sounds better than The Annihilators.
Bring it on

Finished Episode #1 The Final Beginning A Very Strong first entry, Great Performances I Was suprised by Michael Troughton's Performance in this as he felt more comfortable in the role since The 3DA released in January, Impression is quite strong (some moments sounded nothing like Patrick but the are only a few moments. Tim Trelore kinda took me out at some points as his third doctor voice sometimes creeks in Emma Noakes sounds so much like Jen from The IT Crowd but she is pretty good Nicholas Briggs has multiple roles in the story which yeah is a bit distracting but its Great Music and Sound effects creates a really great atmosphere That Ending was dark nice work BF
a Solid 9 out of 10

I'll probably come back to comment on the story itself later (when I've had time to reflect on it and I'm not as tired), but I've a quick question: did anyone else find the sound mix to be pretty awful throughout The Final Beginning? For me, Michael was noticeably lounder than all the guest artists (he almost appeared to be shouting when everyone else was just talking), and Raven was almost inaudible in comparison. To hear her properly meant having Michael being WAY too loud (as in "hurting my ears" too loud), and having Michael at an acceptable volume meant I could barely hear a single word she was saying. I was genuinely angry come the end of the story because of how may times I had to play sections back to try and guess what she was saying. I don't think I've ever been angry at a Big Finish mix before, so this being as abysmal as it is is feels pretty unforgiveable.

That was surprisingly maturely toned
M Troughton is extremely vocally close to his Father and different enough when the situation calls for it.
Some of the story points are well posted, though I must admit the direction the series seems to be going in is riskier than I'd except from a Briggs concept.
Both stories individually are good, you've got your usual supporting player duo of Briggs and Mark Elstop throughout
Katy plays a delightful highly strung Ice Queen as well.
Once again the Reviews and wider response to this release will be very interesting.
My Rating 4/5

I "Think" most of "Final Beginning" was remotely Recorded (atually the Actors were in seperate Studios it seems), but yes the volume differences were noticeable at various points throughout. The Final Beginning by Mark Wright and Nicholas Briggs.
At times, this seemed to be a continuation of the Nick Briggs show. He pops up everywhere, bless him. Hearing him read out the credits, with his name cropping up so many times, makes me raise my eyebrows a bit ('don't listen to the credits then' might be good advice). Nick's suggestion was that, for all the talk of a new start for the Second Doctor, and especially 'freshness', that things should kick off with a sequel to Evil of the Daleks (the clue is in the title). I would have liked something less obvious to introduce Michael Troughton as the new Doctor, I think the decision to do things this way hampers this new start - and hampers writer Mark Wright too. As such, this is what it is.
As Michael Troughton says in the extras, it was weird to have the Second Doctor without a companion, and that he talks to himself throughout - which he carries off very well, by the way. In that way, this was new ground. The sense of disorientation was very well conveyed, I thought. I didn't have a problem with the sound mixing - I think the voices 'came and went' more as a result of attempting to create an audio kind of delirium than any mixing errors. There was also a nice gruesome take on a couple of characters that I didn't expect, and it really does seem as if the Second Doctor is at the beginning of a mission, rather than heading for his usual sporadic adventuring.
So then, a mixed bag for me, with the plusses outweighing the negatives. I think the sound design was first rate, with a lot of Sixties-sounding effects, but I think I would have liked a different, more involving approach if I'm honest.
If I were to give marks out of ten, then it would be 6 out of 10.

Finished the first story, absolutely loved it! Michael Troughton is superb, as is the sound, I felt transported along with the Doctor back to 1969.
The whole notion of the 2nd Doctor existing a fraction of a second outside of time feels like rich ground to tell some really interesting stories.
Hearing new 9th Doctor stories has felt new and exciting, the 2nd Doctor range can have that feel too.
I love all the Doctors but it's great when a range finds a fresh way to tell stories, Dark Eyes felt that way for the Eighth Doctor.

When questioned about her relationship with The Doctor, the normally nice Sheena Flynn proclaims defiantly "I'm no-one's companion!" and she's not the first female BF character to react with such disdain - is 'companion' really such a demeaning term nowadays? I'm sure it must be, although I'm sure there are worse things to be called.
Just as the Second Doctor's second television story took place in Scotland, so too does does his second audio adventure in this all-new, 'fresh' take on the era - complete with, in this story, the Brigadier and the Ice Warriors. It's as if BF are keen to assure us that Series 6B is just the same as 'regular' Doctor Who - in which case, what's the point? Happily, the Martians are put to good use here, and are very well played. Mark Elstob is turning out to be a real asset to Big Finish - here, he imbues Skaar with a real snarling, rasping alien quality. Although I question his inclusion, Jon Culshaw is once again very impressive as the younger Brig, as is Michael Troughton as the Doctor, who consistently maintains the rhythm of his dad's performance, and is very enjoyable to listen to. His continued mangling of the Brig's radio alias is funny and very true to form. Lovely to hear a lively Katy Manning here too.
I enjoyed this more than the first story, and even now, elements of that earlier tale stay with me in a favourable way. This is a pretty solid beginning for the range, but I'd love something really original to be done with Series 6B.
