My foray through the early Bernice Summerfield nears its epic conclusion!
I'll be honest, the last few seasons left me feeling rather ambivalent about this range. I thought I might be better off just sticking to the (fantastic) audio books. The stories weren't bad, but they weren't exactly as compelling as I'd hoped. Fortunately the 4th season marks a pretty solid uptick in overall quality. I think I'm definitely gonna keep going, provided Big Finish helps me out with some decent sales.
The Bellotron Incident isn't a terribly complex story, but it's pretty fun and moves at a solid clip, with some really fun twists and turns. I wonder if they'll ever pick up the loose thread left here of a Rutan-Benny clone wandering the galaxy?
I also gotta say, I really love how much the "Galaxy" Benny is in feels like a consistent setting. Definitely very evocative to ally of the 4th Doctor's era. I am all for it.
That said, yikes, the premise here is annoying AF. Like a great many SF fans, a pet peeve of mine is when writers fail (often spectacularly) to realize that SPACE is BIG. (There's a corollary there regarding TIME being BIG, too.). If you're going to say that the border of two interstellar empires intersects a single star system... you're going to have to explain that! Especially if said border cuts through the orbits of planets! It's not impossible to justify, and ignoring feels either lazy at best or insulting at worst.
Well, regardless of pet peeves, I had a fair bit of fun with this one. Great dialog and, as ever, a pitch-perfect performance from Lisa Bowerman. Has anyone else given this a listen recently? What'd'ya' think?
