I doubt it's CD purchasers being overlooked - the thing's 8 hours long, which wouldn't fit on 6 discs (the maximum number of discs that can fit in a jewel case). The costs to produce, and therefore the price of the release, would probably be too high to justify. I'm also a CD buyer normally, but I'll be getting this one at some point. It seems to me like they have a fair enough reason to make it download-only. Been nice if they'd do a limited edition box set like the recent Masterful slipcover book. And enormously expensive to produce for a rapidly shrinking audience of people who only collect physical media. There will come a time in the not-too-distant future where you will have to decide what you love more, original Doctor Who audio or CDs.

So is this the beginning of the future of Big Finish? As the number of Original Series actors continue to dwindle and most New Series actors aren't interested will audiobooks rather than audioplays eventually become the norm?

So is this the beginning of the future of Big Finish? As the number of Original Series actors continue to dwindle and most New Series actors aren't interested will audiobooks rather than audioplays eventually become the norm? Recasts are now accepted by most fans, 3rd Doctor range for example with the new additions of Sarah Jane, Liz Shaw & the Brigadier as well as Harry in the 4th Doctor range. There are plenty of Tom Baker stories 'in the bank' & Colin, Peter & Sylvester don't appear to be going anywhere yet (& I would imagine the same approach with banking as much as they can is happening) & the same can be said for their respective companions. There is the prospect of a new era for the 2nd Doctor, & more from David Bradley as first doctor. We have just seen the return of Eccleston, who appears to be enjoying himself so there may be more to come beyond what has been recorded so far. David Tennant has, due to lockdown, recorded a lot more & maybe enticed back in the future. & there is McGann, who seems to be a permanent fixture in his audio role as 8 (arguably the one true BF Doctor given how his character has been developed). Other new Doctors? Who knows. Maybe in time. & that's all before taking into account the various spin-offs such a River Song, Torchwood, War Master, Jenny & another successful recast with the new War Doctor Range. So in other words I think you're opinion is wrong. Very very wrong.

I think there is a midpoint where we will see more divergence in this regard. Colin & Sylvester are pushing 80, Tom 90, Peter in his 70's. They will naturally go the way of William Russell and decide to do less in time. I see it as testing of the waters as to whether recasts or narrated audiobooks are preferred by the bread and butter audience of Big Finish for. some aspects of the series. Its all fair comment

So in other words I think you're opinion is wrong. Very very wrong. Very much agree. Its very clear that no matter what that full cast is what appeals to the core BF audience. Always has done and i imagine it always will. I imagine all these releases are doing is to see if narration based stories but in a digital format will appeal to that audience, not that it will take it over completely, or even majority. Big finish would create a spin off over dugan and the welsh ace from delta and the bannerman before they even consider packing in the full cast format

If I'm honest, Audiobooks are the perfect listen for download as you need not worry about changing disks or whether you can load them all up in the CD magazine changer for the car. It is where Audible scores for me when I want a long leisurely listen. Its not an item as such but a long reading of a book. Full cast Dramatisations running at a couple of hours I want to have as a CD release just as one would with a DVD or Blu Ray (or Vinyl record), but I would be equally as likely to listen to the digital version despite having it on CD anyway. So I appreciate what I interpret Timelord007 says in not being a download person. Its not that you won't listen to the digital version, buy that it does not really exist as an owned piece if you do not have a physical copy. The crunch for me comes to price point. Two hours of full cast drama with DL and a CD chucked in, or four times that for a reading without physical ownership. Its like whether you would buy trading cards digital only or prefer to collect the glossy printed versions? Yup got it in one my friend.

I mean, lots of narrated ranges are being reduced or coming to an end (Short Trips, Companion Chronicles...), so I feel these are more of a substitute for those, rather than the very much alive full cast ranges that are starting next years.

Finished listening to Scourge of the Cybermen earlier today, couldn't be impressed enough. Simon Guerrier's script brilliantly captures the characterisations of the Third Doctor and Sarah Jane, while Jon Culshaw's narration with Nick Briggs' Cybermen voice creates a terrifying atmosphere. Outstanding work!

This was quite brilliant! And as a hint, I get to talk to writer Simon Guerrier tomorrow for my podcast!

Quick question for anyone who’s listened to this… how do they deal with Sarah and the Cybermen in this story? Wondering if they managed to work around the fact that Sarah mentions she’s only heard of the Cybermen in Revenge or whether they just ignored it.

Haven't heard this story yet - and I'd also be interested to know - but she doesn't say she's only heard of them... Which gives some wiggle room. (And while she only vaguely knows they're in the 29th century or later, she knows enough of the history of the Cybermen to know they're gone by that point.)

I absolutely adored this... a mystery or two for Sarah to solve and some reliably heroic antics for the Third Doctor. Plus Jon Culshaw just *gets* the show... my take is up at CultBox.

So far, I'm really enjoying this release, while It's been pretty difficult to find 8 hours to put aside for this story, this couple days has been great chance.
Culshaw is a fantastic choice as a first reader, his vocal talent is great, every character has a distinct voice and Culshaw absolutely nails the Third Doctor and Sarah.
I should hopefully finish up this one in the next day or so, the longest Doctor who story in my backlog is almost done, just in time for Watchers to come out in January!

So would it have been a good story for a full cast?
