There are moments when The Five People You Kill in Middlesbrough gets a little too OTT for me, but there are also some very funny, cheeky, very clever moments. Anyone who has cast an eye over the news during recent times might well find lots to enjoy here, as I did, although I'm glad not every release is like this (although next month's Madam, I'm also looks to be extremely camp and arch). Tracey-Ann Oberman leads a terrific cast here, including Tim Bentick as Tommy, er, Alfie as well as Denis Lawson, Sara Powell, Kacey Ainsworth and Lisa Bowerman - all really buying into the heightened style on display here. Oh, Torchwood, how I've missed you.

That could of so easily been a terrible release, but it may well be my favorite Torchwood story. This weeks releases have been so good.

I’m loving this story so far! Yvonne is implacable on her quest. Much like a less gratuitous version of the Bride in Kill Bill…

Well it’s definitely not subtle, and I wouldn’t really call it a clever satire. It is just copying and pasting grievances from British politics’ handling of the pandemic and throwing in Yvonne Hartman to deliver divine retribution. I don’t think it really says anything meaningful nor gives any insight into Yvonne’s character. It kinda reminds me of an episode of Dead Ringers where they had a skit about a meteor hitting and how their charicatured politicians reacted.
I enjoyed it for what it’s worth, but wouldn’t put it among the best of Torchwood.

That's probably why I enjoyed it so much. Especially the bit with the 'internet personality' and what Yvonne did to him.

My take on 'Middlesbrough' is up at CultBox: a wickedly funny tale with a dark heart - but maybe a bit too much, too soon?

I did enjoy this - very smart and very current. With that in mind, the section where the leader of the opposition is a pastiche of Jeremy Corbyn felt a bit weird. When surrounded by satire about malfunctioning apps and super-forecasters who go driving with dodgy eyesight surely the target there should have been Keir Starmer? Corbyn's very much of the pre-Covid era.
That aside, it was very pleasantly wicked satire and I had a great time with it!

Just listened to this. I thought it was lots of fun. I didn't get as much of the British politics satire as all I know from that is what I've heard on the Friday night Comedy podcasts. There are plenty Lancelyn Greens that it would be nice for Yvonne to take care of.

I just noticed that it says that it was written by Yvonne Hartman. So, who actually did it?
I didn't pay enough attention to the interviews to see if anything more was revealed. (I think I remember hearing Tim Foley's name at some point.)
Just found a review which said it was a "pseudonym for Tracy-Ann Oberman, Tim Foley & James Goss"
