It seems the Prequels ended up eclipsing this as the go-to sci-fi punching bag of the 00s, a film that many felt Burton was mismatched for and with an odd ending. Speaking for me, I have a weird nostalgia for it - I first saw it when young and it has stuck with me over the years. I like the design and effects, I like Roth's baddie, I even like the ending (at least, in concept). However, the screenplay leaves a lot to be desired.
Anyone else?

I rewatch the Planet of the Apes films with some frequency (once every year or two), and always skip the Tim Burton one because it's trash.
Last year, I was convinced to include it by the friend I was (remotely) rewatching all the films with. Colossal mistake. 20 years later, it's still trash.

I saw it in the cinemas.. That was when he was still known as "Marky Mark" from the Funky Bunch.. I haven't seen it since- Tim Roth was awesome. No real surprise there!

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I watched about half of it a few years ago and “meh”Ed my way through it. Like all of Burton’s films it looks. Wonderful but it just felt like a contractual obligation rather than a genuine effort to create something interesting. Having binged my way through all the original movies and the remakes in the last few years (which I absolutely loved), I might give it another go sometime to see if my opinion has changed.

Nah, he shook that off with Boogie Nights I'd say. Though he should be known for a lot worse things he did in his youth than his music! On POTA 2001..I grew up with the films. Loved the TV show and the cartoon even. Yet this was horrible. Tim Roth was indeed the best thing in it but some of the inclusions were just baffling. Of course you can't re-do that ending again so Tim Burton comes up with...that. I thought about 15mins before the end when the ape from the start that was sent into space comes through the wormhole and we realise he's kinda their...idol. That was an interesting direction. Something farther on those lines - even quite 2001ish - could have worked. But instead we got an ending that was out of nowhere, not thematic and doesn't hold up to scrutiny. Which also *ahem* borrowed it's Lincoln memorial punchline from Kevin Smith's Chasing Dogma. Terrible. But Rise, Dawn And War have been so good over the last decade that if it took this stumble to get them...I'm happy enough.

I love the original POTA saga, but this 2001 version was a dud. The ending was somewhat in keeping with the original novel but just felt silly & nonsensical. Its hard to surpass the original films, even the newer ones for all their technical brilliance become quite boring & repetitive by the 3rd film lacking the inventiveness of the 60s/70s films.

There was a big hip hop/rap community here back then who loved to Feel The Vibration . Still is from what I am told. (and yes with the reason for his criminal record..GGRRR) . Ironically with all the new ones,I have only seen the 1st reboot.

I dont think any twist ending could have stood up to the original movie's. Just trying to end the Tim Burton movie on one was a mistake. The last of many, many mistakes in that version.
The Serkis trilogy hit it out of the park, IMO. It sucks that it looks like the franchise is going to have another reboot instead of moving into the POTA era of the Serkis films. It woudld have been fun to see a payoff to the rocket shot in the first one.

Shortly after Disney acquired FOX they announced that further Apes films were in development and would be set in the same universe as the Caesar trilogy, and it wasn't too too long ago (I want to say last year?) that the director of the 4th film said publicly that while it won't be a direct sequel to war, it'll be set in the same universe at some time after the end of the trilogy.
