I don't think there is anything wrong with the term vanity project. I'd say that all vanity projects are passion projects.

You know it's a pet project when Nick Briggs says that the podcast isn't complete without a Prisoner plug (a new range, not yet released being an integral part of the podcast?!). Naturally I skipped the trailer at the end. The advertising for The Prisoner is almost getting in-your-face.

Yeah I can't remember Big Finish ever rolling out a new range or release in such a aggressive manner before. They must have a lot of resources sunk into it.

It's unusual when it's announced long before casting and recording. Stories are usually announced after recording so that there is a picture to accompany the news story and they can be 100% sure of the casting they announce, as well as hinting towards what the stories will contain. The Prisoner was announced in January while recording only happened in September, when the trailer was released. Casting was also something of an unreveal, listeners having to guess the actors based on the voices in the trailer (concealed identity may have been appropriate to the original TV episodes, I don't know).

The casting reveal was just odd. With the best will in the world, teasing "Well, we're holding back Number 6 for a week" doesn't really wor if its a guy that only followers of regional UK theatre will know (unless you're an Emmerdale fan with a long memory for minor characters). Hype can sell a range for sure but when reveals are met with "Who?"...well, it's not ideal.
Love the castings of the various 2s but I'm a huge fan of Celia Imrie and Michael Cochran in general (Michael's popped up on new tv twice this week - Don't Panic: The Dad's Army Story as Arnold Ridley and he was in the last every Downton Abbey tonight as the Vicar marrying...some posh person to some other posh person.

That's another reason why it's best to wait until recording is done before announcing something new (or there are updates), people have plot hints, writers, actors and characters to compel them to buy or become interested in the release. Who doesn't appreciate a picture from the actors in studio? So the not revealing of the cast doesn't tie into the style of the old TV episodes? Michael Cochrane has been in some great audios. He was in No Man's Land with the Seventh Doctor and Brotherhood of the Daleks with the Sixth Doctor. Memorable in Trail of the White Worm and The Oseidon Adventure with the Fourth Doctor, but utterly wasted in Fate of Krelos and Return to Telos.

I don't think the series will be anywhere near a flop - it fits in very nicely with the regular Big Finish customer base and their intrests. I think the sales will probably be very good on the whole.
In terms of packaging, I think it's more the case of Big Finish wanting to stand out to prospective offline customers outside of Doctor Who. Not everyone takes to audio drama, after all - and a traditional audio box set might not be as appealing to the unconverted.

You're taking that too literally. Nick was saying that with a self-deprecating tongue-in-cheek. He didn't actually mean it at face value.
