I was thinking back in 2003 what if instead of approaching Richard E Grant To play the Ninth (Shalka) Doctor for Scream of the Shalka they Decided to go with Paul McGann as a continuation of Classic Who
Would it have worked better and would have lined up with RTD’s 2005 series Or would it have just been an unbound 8th Doctor adventure

I was thinking back in 2003 what if instead of approaching Richard E Grant To play the Ninth (Shalka) Doctor for Scream of the Shalka they Decided to go with Paul McGann as a continuation of Classic Who Would it have worked better and would have lined up with RTD’s 2005 series Or would it have just been an unbound 8th Doctor adventure It was always designed to be a new Doctor which is the only way they got the funding (the DVD is great, packed full of info on this) - but imagining it was McGann? Well, it would be better for one reason. Richard E. Grant is horrendous in the role. Shouting, angry and just totally unlikable. There's a Doctor Who Confidential where RTD goes through the casting for Series 1 and he's asked if he considered REG and he says no, he was horrendous in Shalka and he wanted to get that "official" Ninth Doctor re-written ASAP. Now, RTD is a true luvvie, he's got something nice to say about every Doc so it shows how strong he felt that he'd publically slag Grant. I really like Grant, he's a terrific actor but he misjudged that performance totally. McGann would not. He was already back playing The Doctor with BF and doing grand. So if nothing else changed but the Doctor was more likable...instant improvement. Yet it's a part of the wildnerness years so I have enormous affection for it still. I remember trying to get my dial-up internet to load the flash player and it taking ages. Doctor Who had a new home....the cult page (RIP) of the BBC website.

Kind of don't like the idea of changing it, its "charm" is its oddity.
Its a "What if" version of the Doc if 9th and 12th were grumpy G*ts all the time if it was 8th I suppose it would be a slightly lighter touch/tone to it.

Much as I love McGann, I don't think it would make a meaningful addition to the revival one way or another. A lot of Shalka's rep is because of its weird placement in history, not so much as a great story in its own right. Not Cornell's finest moment.
(Though I love Shalka's costume).

I think if McGann was involved, not a lot would have changed either way. Aside from years later Big Finish and other EU material stepping forward to naturally fill in the necessary gaps and explain why the Doctor is travelling with a robot Master in this, etc.

Regards mark687 Honestly i saw Richard E Grants Version of The Doctor as a reimaigning of a Classic Who Doctor (6th doctor in particular) with a more bitter Early 2000s edge
