Any Ted Lasso fans out there, Jamie Tartt is in this one! (Phil Dunster) Season 2 is one of the best seasons of TV in years. Takes a cool comedy and makes it SO powerful. And because you laughed at them and loved them for a season already....you care what happens. Oh, when Jamie throws that punch...and the hug after it...so powerful. Ive said to so many people that this - a football comedy - is the ONLY place that has accurately captured the way I feel, exactly, with panic attacks and grief. To a tee.

Excellent performances as per though its a bit predicable in places
Companion Piece works well as a companion piece to Sky Man
4/5

I'll be interested to read others thoughts on this over the coming days. I thought it was an odd set and I can't quite put my finger on why.
I loved the structure of the set and that they kept it hidden throughout the promotional pieces was a nice touch. I loved the sense of dread in The Forest of Penitence and I liked each individual episode well enough. I think at its core every episode was broadly the same - a small cast in low key settings - and they felt repetitive as the set went on, I think if the two trial stories were a bit more unconventional then it might flow better. Cole's reappearance doesn't amount to much and makes telling it alongside The Sky Man feel forced in a way Killing Time didn't. The Doctor also feels quite superfluous to requirements too, not quite the rematch that I was hoping for really and I think they missed a trick not leaning onto him knowing about the four knocks prophecy post-Planet of the Dead. I suppose in a nutshell everything just happens and that's it.
Not a bad set by any means, but lacks that punch this range has. Hopefully a relisten now I know the structure fares better.

Really enjoying Forest of Penitentence 50 minutes in I give it 9/10. Looking forward to hearing more next time I get in the car.

Halfway through and bit on fence so far. The Forest was decent one-shot of the Master on the back foot until he’s not but I struggled to keep invested in The Players. Its problem is not having the Master do a great deal bar worm his way around a basic police state and, unlike previous outings where he infiltrates a society at start of a scheme, there's no real payoff to be had here due to nature of the framing device going on. I suppose it’s nice to have an example of the Master’s infiltration not quite working out but just feels a bit redundant as a story. {Spoiler} Also on The Forest, if I had a penny for 2022 Big Finish stories involving people becoming trees I’d have two pennies now. Weird it’s happened twice.

Tennant's only in the ultimate episode, right? My big worry going into this is that, yeah, the conflict with the Doctor won't be adequately fleshed put. With someone like Beevers, we can have these little one-off episodic encounters because we know there's a.ways more coming, but with the War Master? Each time he encounters another character it's more of an event. And I feel like there needs to be a proper arc spanning the full set w/ the two facing off against each other--or at least interacting with one another--from the beginning. This is now the third (technically fourth) War Master boxset featuring the Doctor, and each time their interactions have almost entirely been confined to a single episode. Seems like wasted potential.....

Really got engrossed into The Forest of Penitence, with the guest cast being quite engaging shades of various grey. Jacobi really relished in this episode as well, with playing The Master with such irreverence, in a situation where The War Master likely is just playing the idiot for as long as possible to mess with the captor. The Players has started off quite strong, though it hasn't really lived up to the synopsis of everyone wanting to be the best villain on the planet.

The Players has started off quite strong, though it hasn't really lived up to the synopsis of everyone wanting to be the best villain on the planet. This was something I forgot in my post. Apart from a mention in the synopsis and a brief mention at the beginning of the episode, I don’t think everyone wanting to be the best villain on the planet, or the worst being a crime, comes into play whatsoever. It’s a cracking concept, it’s just abandoned in favour of this lower stakes, almost two hand story. I think the set framing device is partly responsible, but just makes each instalment feel like diminishing returns in hindsight.

This is now the third (technically fourth) War Master boxset featuring the Doctor, and each time their interactions have almost entirely been confined to a single episode. Seems like wasted potential..... Yep, Tennant is only in the last episode. I don’t mind the encounter only being in one episode. I loved the Doctor going through the wringer in Rage of the Time Lords and the preceding episode building that sense of dread for when they do encounter each other. I loved the catch in Hearts of Darkness too. In this set they do a fair amount of interaction early on, but it doesn’t really sizzle or feel like it does anything or goes anywhere. As I said originally, the Doctor really feels superfluous to requirements here. There’s not enough substance outside of one bit of plot advancement and the idea of Jacobi & Tennant facing each other again. That’s not to say I wouldn’t mind the Doctor being in a full set, although I’m not actually that fussed now unless they get the War Doctor in, but if their one episode encounter is a corker then it feels substantial enough to me.

I enjoyed the last two stories. Boundaries had some fun with the timeline setting and I liked that the enemy was just a thing, rather than some evil mastermind. Matches The Sky Man’s sense of the cosmos just chucking its debris at the poor planet out of dumb luck rather then any plan.
The Last Line was fairly juicy. Tennant is on fine form and it’s nice to a War Master story where he and the Doctor do just talk a fair bit, as the Doctor is on a more even keel for a change with his foreknowledge. Obviously there’s a big twist flipping things on their head towards the end (it’s a War Master story, of course there is) and I enjoyed how that played out.
The only thing though; What was the point of the trial as a framing story? It added basically nothing to The Players and Boundaries. I’d have just had them be totally stand-alone and have Forest and Last Line as a duology.

Really enjoyed ep 1, very atmospheric. An example of BF firing on all cylinders, ticking all boxes. Let's hope eps 2 -4 maintain the same standard

The rest never quite reached the heights of ep 1 but all still good nonetheless
The music for "For the love of stories" at the start of each ep worked well

I thought it was pretty good myself - Jacobi's one of the phone book readers isn't he? He could be phoning it in, thinking about the lunches, and no one would ever know. I actually liked how they addressed the issue of not executing the Master in this one as I personally think he's the exception to the rule where the death penalty is concerned, and I liked that we had a more cynical Doctor up against him this time. Tennant was superb as well. Looking forward to relistening!

I have only listened to the first story so far. A collection of people talking in a forest does seem the most exiting of synopses, but I enjoyed it Very much whilst listening to it, but looking back I wonder where the time went.
However it has set up a mystery I am intrigued with.
Every time I listen to a War Master story I feel grateful to RTD for casting Derek Jacobi, and even more grateful to Big Finish for being able to produce these with the great man.

Apologise if this is already something that has occured and I have missed due to life getting in the way of my BF consumption. But, have BF got plans to put Jacobi and Baker together and take the two actors out for a spin. That would simply be a wonderful outing for these two. I for one would love to see the two bounce of each other. In this box set I think that Baker could have offered something extra than the use of Tennant. What are other peoples thoughts on this?

Might give some folks an aneurysm, but I'd definitely be down for Big Finish giving Derek Jacobi the "River Song" treatment and just pairing him opposite literally every Doctor and every Companion.

The resultant amnesia from Meeting River and the Warm Master are why the Doctor can never remember their age.
