My journey through the Six/Charlie arc continues! Of which this is one of my favorite stories so far. What's not to love? Alien shenanigans, crimes and conspiracies--lost memories and mysterious crimes--and, of course, D.I. Menzies!
Who is, of course, enormously fun. I especially liked that here we have what basically amounts to a "government conspiracy" with regards to aliens secretly living on a earth, but rather than some secret organization like Torchwood or UNIT it's just one cop going out of her way to help some people out. It's a very... optimistic view of humanity, and I love it. What does it say about her character than Menzies not only takes these revelations of extra-terrestrials and time-travelers in stride, but fully embraces the nonsense, stepping up to help where she can? You can easily see how well she "qualifies" for a position on the TARDIS--here's hoping she makes it there one day. After wall, what are the 7DAs for if not that?
Weirdly enough, the titular "Raincloud Man" didn't seem to have much of a role in this story. But I'm not sure that's really a bad thing, considering how often the "contagious bad luck character" trope has been done before.
The Six/Charlie arc continues to be underwhelming. Their whole relationship dynamic is great, but the actual arc amounts to little more than teasing us about Charlie confessing, and then her failing to do so. Her reluctance seems especially egregious here, as we've got a temporally-sensitive alien telling her how monumentally dangerous her silence is, and she still reacts with a, "Nah, I don't wanna." Which is especially annoying given that she's already violated the laws of time simply by giving the Sixth a Doctor the name, "Charlotte Pollard."
Well, anyway, those are my thoughts. A very fun story! I on,y wish there were more stories with Menzies out there--she's a great character and very unlike any of the other companions we've had.
