I'm not quite sure why this range ended, but I seem to remember it was blamed on low sales/too many illegal downloads. I think it was The Tomorrow People that was cancelled when BF suddenly lost the rights.
I remember after the second Sapphire and Steel series ended, there was considerable doubt as to the possibility of a third, and the message seemed to be that the range would need supporting. Having said that, the final story Wall of Darkness had more than a hint of finality about.
A real, real shame - but some great stories.

You know, one thing I was always surprised about when it comes to Big Finish's take on Sapphire and Steel is that they never had any of the Transuranic Elements make an appearance. Obviously, they're not meant to be used where there's life but I feel like they could have made for an interesting story. Being slightly more unpredictable than the usually stoic Steel or even the more empathic Sapphire.

Well, at least we had the lovely David Collings in his own role as Silver...

This was a great series. The first series was outstanding. At the time, that first Sapphire and Steel series was up there with the best of the Doctor Who monthly stories. They are still stories that I dig out and listen to. Outstanding describes them perfectly.

I may be misremembering, but I seem to recall that the rights lapsed and the IP was being touted/pitched for a possible TV revival and so an extension was declined? It may be another similar case but that was maybe just a supposition on the old forum? Whatever, it hasn't come to pass, so maybe it should be financially viable once again to negotiate to resell?
Anyhow, I managed to get the whole of series 2, the first of series 1 (which was the only one not sold out by then) and 3.2 of series 3 before the range suddenly got pulled as I was in the process of getting what was left. I really enjoyed and 'got' those I listened to, but was always rueful that I missed most of series 1, such as The Lighthouse.
I unpackaged the CD's and ripped them onto HD a few years back, but still have to return to those I have not listened to, so, a case of having some to look forward to, but always in mind that I missed 'the best' of the audio adventures (series one). Must revisit/complete those I have, as I keep intending to.
Its a curious thing, what with the nature of the characters, that I for one, did not really question their change in appearance and vocalisation...they were who they were and it did not feel like a recast job.
And of course, David Collings provided an anchor link to the TV series by reprising his original role of 'Silver'. So it had to be canon..
NB: I was pleased to note recently that he was the (UK) voice of Monkey

It’s an excellent range but one which I felt didn’t really end satisfactorily. Mind you, I never was a fan of the conclusion they were building towards anyway. So, it’s really a case of swings and roundabouts. I thought it was a great range. I loved the first two seasons, they were really good ... the third season not so much so. (I'd put Second Sight and Remember Me only slightly a level above Exile in my worst BF audio list.) Geez really?I was interested in the John Dorney story too my favourite will always be the first i bought in a shop in Glasgow DAISY CHAIN am sad I didn’t continue at the time but hey you win some you lose some

I don't think I've heard Second Sight (I've got them all) but I thought Remember Me was excellent. Here is my review from that site that we don't visit or discuss anymore:
A tale ultimately about living in, and regretting, the past.
The main character, an aging former TV and stage star and the setting - a decaying and now disused music hall at the end of a seaside pier (also a thing of the past) - fuel a manifestation that Sapphire and Steel must confront.
A slightly uncomfortable listen at times, and a small reminder to us all to stop dwelling on things and fretting about missed opportunities, and to start enjoying the present.
The cast are excellent, as is the sound design. Not quite as slick as later Big Finish products...but who cares eh?

You could love what they did! After all, there's even people who like Exile... so it's great we can all take different things from Big Finish stories.
My advice is hunt those Sapphire & Steel S3 CD's down and judge them for yourself.

You know, I really need to revisit this range. From what I can remember, I really liked it (especially the inclusion of such characters as the arrogant Gold) but found the final series rather unnecessary.
Actually, it does make me wonder if they were able to revive the series (Quite frankly it’ll never happen) what they would do with it. With the current state of Big Finish, they’d never be able to get away with the sort of stories they used to do for this range. The excellent Daisy Chain springs to mind as an example.

Of all the early BF stuff that I missed out on, this is the one I regret most. But if I started trying to collect these my OCD would kick in and it would end up either breaking my heart or bankrupting me. So I think best just let Sapphire and Steel be my "one that got away" unless it is ever rereleased as DL only

Not really connected with BF's Sapphire and Steel range, but an audio nonetheless: I found this little gem, an epic slice of atmospheric, eerie ambient music inspired by, but not taken from Sapphire and Steel. If you think you might like it, have a listen. I love it!

While this thread has popped up, I've been listening to this range for the first time. What a gem. This leans into the darkness the same way that Dark Shadows and Torchwood tends to do, yet it does so in it's own unique way. The leads are terrific. They capture the essence of David McCallum and Joanna Lumley while clearly making these characters their own. It's such a shame that this ended up being so hard to find.

So.. For all the people lucky enough to have purchased these back in the day.. Do you automatically get them updated into your accounts?
Can anyone confirm?
Thanks,

To anyone contemplating getting these, I'd strongly recommend them, and at that price you can't really go wrong.

Thanks, That will have been long before the Great Website Reset, so I'm guessing it's as if it happened in another time which is remembered, but also forgotten. Unless BF have skilled agents they can send to sort out such past anomalies...
