I have no idea what to make of that. A series of loosely connected events most of which completely lack any kind of context. It’s clearly all setup, but god knows for what. Agreed no way you could say that this EP has a story in its own right Regards mark687 Yes well its a sixparter and it kind of hooked me that way and will allow the story to unfold...and the desolation of the planets was greatly cinematic

Production value was like that of a big-budget feature film.

To quote the 9th Doctor, "Fantastic". I thought Chibbers was overselling the idea of a single story over six episodes but judged on this start that's exactly what this is. Unlike the arcs before which were always briefly mentioned in a way that often felt like an afterthought in an otherwise standalone episode this is real classic era stuff but with modern sensibilities. A mid-adventure opening like a James Bond film - Yaz & the Doctor obviously have had loads of adventures between this & the previous episode. Dan's character was succinctly brought to life & I warmed to him straight away - a nice guy but also one too proud to take the help he so readily offers others. The Division & a secret history between the Doctor & a really creepy villain - a creature kept for millennia in a prison is a classic idea. I assumed characters like Vinder would be appearing with the Doctor over multiple episodes but I'm guessing the various different plot threads will converge & they will meet later. Nice couple of easter eggs, Nitro-9, Observation Outpost Rose. The Weeping Angels scary again in their brief scene. A proper 'how will they get out of this' cliff-hanger. & not to mention the stuff set in the 19th century or what on earth is going on with the TARDIS. What is that all about? So many questions, & I loved every minute of it.

It is delivering what Chibbers said it would, a six part story with cliffhangers or more accurately 6 chapters of a single adventure. No one should be surprised tbh.

I actually saw parallels between this and Janet's debut, Logopolis.

In the tradition of Salad Man, behold: ''From Big Productions, Trick-or-Treater. An epic five boxsets, featuring cameos from Colin Baker, Derek Jacobi and Christopher Eccleston. Join the Beer & Egg Crusader for treats on his thrilling quest to pelt the Doctor's most diabolical foes. Nicholas Briggs returns as the Daleks, the Cybermen, the Ice Warriors and that lizard thing from Timelash. £59.00 pre-order discount.''

Hard one to judge on its own merits, as it’s very much building up to one greater whole. I do really admire it not being standalone, though. There was a lot happening, but equally there was lots to like too; the Doctor’s visions, the gorgeous visuals and John Bishop stole the show as Dan.

I don't know what was going on, but I liked it! As a first episode of six it did exactly what it said on the tin. Obviously the answers to all of the questions will come in latter episodes.
A nice start... it's just a pity we have a wait a week for the next episode!

I think I’m checking out of this thread and will wait to watch the whole on a binge.

Surprisingly, I quite liked that! I think it's one of Chibnall's best scripts. The dialogue wasn't quite as dull as normal (in fact, he actually got some one-liners in there that weren't cringe-worthy) and I enjoyed the dynamic between Yaz and 13 - I like the fact that she's standing up to 13 and questioning her more. I'm not quite as bothered about Chibnall's mythology but gotta admit that the new aliens look great.
I do get the criticisms that there were a lot of elements involved, but given that we've got 5 more episodes to explore them I'm not too concerned, I'm sure it'll all come together (hopefully in a satisfying way...)

Loved it.
THIS is the Chibnall of Broadchurch - lots of story strands set up and lots of set up, to be whittled away over the series. I like Dan but I get the feeling we missed a treat not having a season with just Mandip and Jodie. SO good together.
When the episode literally opens with "Chapter One" in the title, I don't think complaints about it not telling a full story matter much. Nor does resolution. Like Broadchurch this is putting all the chess pieces on the board - it's the next five weeks where we see how they move.
Delighted The Division is still utmost in The Doctors thoughts, seems the NY Special was a one off and this is the real follow up to S12 and The Timeless Children.
BTW: Outpost Rose? Hmmmm....

So it seems our new villains took on A Doctor. Is it a future one? I doubt it, much more likely to be another Timeless Doc doing Division work. Will it be Jo? Another revealed new Doc or someone we've seen already (Dan doesn't seem to be someone with much of a past...). Loved the Doctor being excited at being at Klopp era Anfield. If you cannae be at Celtic Park...next best thing.

Basically to parrot what other's had said; pretty entertaining, interesting Act 1 to a larger story. Though the ending panning over all the various characters in their plot threads very much reminded me of the way Broadchurch would close it's episodes.

So beyond Chibnall's paranoid fear of spoilers I can't see why review copies weren't sent out to the newspapers and magazines. This was a good episode by his standards and would have gotten decent reviews. He's basically just throwing away free publicity.
