Great start, this is the kind of storytelling I was expecting from Chibnall when he was announced. I just hope most of the plotlines are not mystery boxes that will lead nowhere but I am quite confident in Chris.
One line that I found quite interesting is that Yaz told Dan she has quit the police. I wonder if we will learn more about it, Chris always likes to wrote about police officers in his scripts so I found it surprising.

Points for Diane - they let her be a person and treat her disability as just part of the world. It's refreshingly unsaccaharine. Sadly, you've probably also guessed the reaction from some quarters.
They never drew attention to Diane's disability, and that's still 'too much' for some. Even The Telegraph had a pop at it.
Wow. I can’t believe I expected more from a non-tabloid newspaper. 😔 I’ve gone off them recently and will continue to do so indefinitely.

I saw the scene and I knew this reaction would come.
Anyone wants to do any bets on how long it will take for anyone to complain about the"gay agenda" as soon as RTD takes over? 5 minutes? 15 minutes? Pretty sure won't take even a full episode.

I'm game. I am expecting complaints to fully start at the release of a trailer but about a "trans agenda", given RTD's statements about the (so called) "LGB" alliance a few weeks ago. Or maybe a "non binary agenda" considering a future doctor he teased in his Rose novelisation.

Anyone noticed the parallels to Never Ending Story in this episode? An all destroying void. Mercenary characters in service of said void. Protective monsters with dog heads. Coincidence?

As I have not been a fan of this era at all, my expectations were pretty low when heading into this episode. I have been unenthusiastic for this season since we found out about the premier. And the pre-credits scene filled me with more apathy. I thought it was terrible and even turned it off, only to give it another shot a few hours later. And lo and behold...I liked it! A lot! Granted, as people have said, it was mostly set up so I will hold off my final judgement until after I've seen the whole thing, however I think it was quite good for what it was. It did what it was supposed to do in a very entertaining way. There was really a sense that time has gone by for The Doctor and Yaz, who is now very confident in herself. Dan is terrific, I really liked his intro. He has more character in that one episode than Yaz and Ryan were given in their entire first season.
The Swarm is something new and interesting, and I like that Chibnall has tied these things to the set up in The Timeless Child. (Because even though I don't like it, I like that he is confident enough to stick with it and hopefully expand upon it.) In general, the dialogue seemed somewhat less stiff than in the last two seasons, and while I agree that it was still there, the tendency of stating what just happened was much less egregious and intrusive.
So I guess I'm on board for this ride. Hopefully it continues to be a good one!

I actually saw parallels between this and Janet's debut, Logopolis. Same here. The Flux reminded me of the entropy wave in 'Logopolis'! Tim

That was thrilling! It was fantastic to see Doctor Who doing a proper epic. The stakes are so high and the episode did an excellent job of demonstrating that while also weaving in numerous plot threads that I'm sure will all come together by the end and until they do, it'll be really fun to speculate on how it all fits. I like Dan so far, he seems like a good fit with the Doctor and companion we already have, everything clicked into place nicely. Some other thoughts:
- I think the bedding that the Doctor and Yaz landed on early in the episode was probably meant to show the sentience of the Tardis and how it's looking out for their safety, but the subtext of it doesn't seem like a mistake. It feels like a pretty deliberate comment on the Doctor and Yaz's relationship.
- I got the impression that the Doctor and Yaz have been traveling together for a while since we saw them last. Yaz seems to have grown a lot in confidence and she's able to read the Doctor's moods with great accuracy. She kind of reminded me of late stage Tegan or Sarah Jane, having been with the Doctor for so long that she's come to know even the impenetrable alien side of the Doctor well.
- Interesting seeing old school Sontarans. That felt pretty nostalgic for me.
- Claire seems like a really interesting character and I hope she'll play a big role in the story going forward. Her comment about taking the long way around and then getting stalked and touched by an angel suggests more than the usual human life span. I'm very curious to see what's going on with that. I also thought that Annabel Scholey delivered a nicely nuanced performance even with her relatively limited screen time.
- Dan does seem to have some questions floating around in his background, doesn't he. Having no food in his house while working in a food bank and also giving history tours has shades of Jo Martin's introduction as the Doctor. I could be reading too much into it, but it has a bit of a Doctor-in-hiding sort of vibe.
- The Rose reference may just be a cute reference, similar to the Nitro 9 reference in the opening scene, but it has me wondering a bit . . .
- Kudos on solving the villain problem that this era has struggled with a bit. The antagonist felt intimidating and unnerving.
Over all, I think there's a lot of potential here. If this series can maintain its momentum, we're in for a real treat.

It feels like a pretty deliberate comment on the Doctor and Yaz's relationship. Hmmm... yeah, could be INTERPRETED that way, and I am sure some people are already setting up their slash fic.... but honestly, the relationship to me looks anything bit romantic..... Not really getting these vibes at all...- I got the impression that the Doctor and Yaz have been traveling together for a while since we saw them last. Yaz seems to have grown a lot in confidence and she's able to read the Doctor's moods with great accuracy. She kind of reminded me of late stage Tegan or Sarah Jane, having been with the Doctor for so long that she's come to know even the impenetrable alien side of the Doctor well. Yes, I had that impression, too, but I also get some tendency that it has lasted too long and it is turning a bit sour.... for some reason, Yaz and the Doctor just do not give me the same friendship vibes as for example Amy, or Donna, or Clara (without the romantic subtext) are giving me, or something like the Doctor and Liv. As you say, it is more like Tegan or even Peri. - Interesting seeing old school Sontarans. That felt pretty nostalgic for me. They are indeed quite cool- Claire seems like a really interesting character and I hope she'll play a big role in the story going forward. Her comment about taking the long way around and then getting stalked and touched by an angel suggests more than the usual human life span. I'm very curious to see what's going on with that. I also thought that Annabel Scholey delivered a nicely nuanced performance even with her relatively limited screen time. I have the suspicion there are a few Time Lord agents in hiding in this story.... just a strong feeling/ indication....- Dan does seem to have some questions floating around in his background, doesn't he. Having no food in his house while working in a food bank and also giving history tours has shades of Jo Martin's introduction as the Doctor. I could be reading too much into it, but it has a bit of a Doctor-in-hiding sort of vibe. Or Time Lord agent. Doctor in hiding.... after we had Ruth, that would be disappointingly obvious. But maybe he is the hidden incarnation that took on the big bad? But that would mean we get no Jo Martin. - The Rose reference may just be a cute reference, similar to the Nitro 9 reference in the opening scene, but it has me wondering a bit . . . I was wondering that too. I wonder if we get another cult of the Doctor or something... that has secret listening posts....- Kudos on solving the villain problem that this era has struggled with a bit. The antagonist felt intimidating and unnerving. My thoughts exactlyOver all, I think there's a lot of potential here. If this series can maintain its momentum, we're in for a real treat.

I finally had some time to sit down with this one last night and I really enjoyed it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Doctor Who episode quite like it actually - not even the bigger scale stories at Big Finish have ever really gone for a scale quite this large. Sure, we have stories with universe ending threats all the time, but this just feels bigger somehow. I do hope it pays off. I’m really excited to learn more about the Division and I also love that what appears to be the Big Bad this series isn’t a character we’ve ever seen before.
I’m not sure about anyone else, but for me there was almost too much set up in this episode. It kind of overwhelmed me at a certain point in this episode and I felt a little taken out of the story until toward the end. And while I’m also excited by the scale and mystery this series has set up, I can’t help but feel a little worried the answers might not live up to the hype or that the execution might be a little sloppy since this really is the first time I think the show has ever tried this approach.
In any case, this is absolutely the most intriguing opening episode for a series I’ve seen yet.
