I greatly enjoyed the tv version with it now being my second favourite Doctor Who story behind The Enemy of the World. I didn’t notice any plot holes when I watched it although I’ve been made aware that there are some and that the Target book fixes them. Does anyone think that the tv version deserves more praise?

Am never quite sure about it i guess everyone trying to pretend its a nice bright sunny warm day when it is obvious they are freezing cold lol.Story wise i find it ok but definitely not a go to story. I suppose it has the honour of providing a scene in Iterations Of I where the team try to pilot the Tardis-correctly while the Doctor reads Black Orchid

I really like Black Orchid though, but listening to the commentary, it might just be me and Sarah Sutton! The fact that it isn't a sci-fi story seemed to annoy the cast, but that's partly why I like it. It's a good, emotive little tale that never outstays its welcome, has a great guest cast and is suitably creepy before we learn the tragic tale of George Cranleigh. There are a good few twists and misunderstandings to ensure it never gets boring. So yes, I would say it very underrated.

Me and Tim Bradley like it as well.

& of course it is a 2-parter. Very rare in Classic Who. The story doesn't outstay its welcome although maybe it could have done with a couple more suspects.

Yes it is
Its one of those outlier stories the Doctor Who like City of Death, nothing else quite like it had happened before in Doctor Who but there's something wholly Doctor Who about it.
Its also underrated because it has one of the best location film restorations in the DVD/Blu-Ray Ranges.

Been a while since I watched the episode but I do remember liking it even if it was just a straight forward mystery. The Target book was as Williams said excellent though.

Well, I enjoyed it very much. It is such a change of pace and just a complete odd ball of a story. Thumbs up from me.

You'd think that because 'Black Orchid' isn't a sci-fi story that people like Peter, Janet and Matthew would like it since it isn't heavily complicated. I was shocked that Peter, Janet and Matthew didn't like it very much. I was pleased that Sarah at least liked it from hearing the audio commentary.

Tim I do not really get why they did not like it. It is a nice story and I am happy we do not have to deal with Daleks again which by now I am sick of.
Anyways.
This is something to ask at a convention!

I was told years ago from a mate that the powers that be realised they were 2 episodes "short" .. so that's how this story came about.. All I can remember is the TARDIS being taken from a train station and Tegan's Charleston(?) dancing?
Is this explanation correct or is my mate wrong?

All I know is JNT hated six-parters so he created a two-parter followed by two four-parters.

I might keep that mind next time I see Peter, Sarah and Janet at a convention. Tim

Kind of A Script fell though and JNT asked Terrance Dudley (Four to Doomsday) and Christopher Bailey (Kinda) if they had another idea handy. Dudley had a non Who Murder Mystery script he thought he could adapt but it wouldn't fit 4 EPs so it was decided to make it 2 [with a lot of location Footage hence the Cricket Match] Bonus it almost balanced the year's production budget so it was done again in Series 21 (not done in Series 20 cause JNT wanted a Holida- sorry I meant filming abroad ) Regards mark687

You know, I’ve been rewatching Campion recently and it does occur to me Black Orchid could have easily been worked to fit that series.
