Resolution is the best storywise. Revolution the best for sheer spectacle, but the most fun and engaging of the Dalek NY Specials is this one. It's also the most S11 this era has felt, since it ended: pared down, just the facts ma'am adventure with little in the way of a grander tapestry or pretense. Sarah and Nick feel a lot more alive and textured compared to a lot of the supporting players of the last two series - both losers stranded in dead-end life situations that, metaphorically which turns to literally, never seem to end. The plot, in turn, forces them out of that routine and apathy into actually changing their circumstances, which also mirrors our leads. While it would've been nice if this had manifested earlier, at least the 13/Yaz situation is finally evolving and it'll be interesting to see how far Chibnall goes in the next two specials. The same guy who said yes to 'unburying the gays' in Praxeus doesn't seem like the guy who would let this end tragically.
Daleks here are great and an improvement from Revolution: threatening, focused and scheming. There's a sadistic glee we haven't seen from them in some time, relishing trapping and killing the Doctor over and over. We even get a funny sequence that doesn't completely unbalance them, with Dan going into Karen mode to distract the Dalek. Laufer was a great find as a director and really milks the claustrophobic nature of the story, with a sombre colour palette that makes Elf Storage feel as depressing and dated as it is for our supporting cast. For a story turned around quickly and under covid circumstances, there's a lot of work here to admire.
However, there are shortcomings: already covered Nick's dodgy behaviour, which clearly needed another draft to really delineate better 'the line' there. There's also a lack of clarity about why the midnight time limit is such a threat - we can infer it means everyone's dead/destroyed at the end, but if the Daleks don't manage to kill everyone before it ends, what happens? It's that annoying habit of this era to rely on assumption/head canon rather than being clear in the text. Also, cool as the power outage kills are, why didn't the Daleks save that for last, since it's when they are the deadliest in the story? Is the idea that they got cocky after that? Or why did they never use it again after - again, a giveaway of production circumstances and something that might've been clarified in another draft. Still, a fun enough ride.

I will say, it is a shame Jeff's leftover junk is just there for a gag and doesn't factor into really beating the Daleks. I wanted Dan to use the beef and beans!

Well. Finally got around to this. From what I heard, went into this with very low expectations. Now, I am pleasantly surprised. This is simple but effective. I am also aware that this was very cost effective filming and they did the very best what they could with limited funding. I think the best sentence, and what made me cry out loud with laughter- Dalek: "I am not Nick!" (my thought: "Yeah, right.")
BIG however: I am still not on board with any Doctor/ Companion romantic relationship, no matter what form it takes (heterosexual, homosexual, humanoid on sponge for all I care). Best and most fun they could do with limited location funding. Yes, I know, this is basically Groundhog day mixed with Five Nights at Freddy's. But it works. It is simple and effective and it works for me.

Just remind me, the guy at the end. "Good display" I have seen him before. Who is he? Is he that Jeff person?

Holy crap! I really really dug this episode. Simple premise, with quirky characters bouncing off each-other. Perfect for a New Years Dalek romp.
