Do the members of UNIT I.e. the Brigadier, Sergeant Benton and Captain Yates count as companions?

I personally just tend to consider them as allies of the Doctor rather than his companions.

I feel like the format change also changed the status quo for what a companion was. Liz and the Brigadier are certainly companions with no doubt in my mind. Yates and Benton are more debatable but the EU would suggest that they were as well.

I tend to class Mike Yates as a companion of the fourth doctor just due to his Hornets Nest stuff etc

Liz, yes. The Brig, probably not. Benton, no. Yates, yes, though only in the EU, with both the Third Doctor (Speed of Flight, Havoc of Empires) the Fourth (Hornet's Nest etc). I tend to class Mike Yates as a companion of the fourth doctor just due to his Hornets Nest stuff etc I really need to get around to listening to the Nest Cottage stuff. Is it any good at all? I like them but I tend to be a fan of Paul Magrs' stuff!
