These can vary massively in terms of content and style, but whatever media it is (games, movies, TV, etc), what content do you see as a big plus, maybe even mandatory, for something that calls itself the 'collector's edition'? And what are some letdowns?

Well for starters, BF calling normal cd's as "collector's editions" is wrong and it annoys me greatly every time I read it.
I have a house sized converted shed full of cd's, vinyls, cassettes, dvd's, blu rays, video tapes, books, action figures etc. Mainly music wise it's an extra cd of bonus songs, a few books in my collection have been reissues with an extra chapter..
I always go for the collector's edition over normal/stock standard as long as there is extra content..

1) Exclusive stories only available in the expensive edition 2) Especially when the trade paperback is more than I'm prepared to pay anyway 3) Stupidly-expensive collectors' editions 4) Piss-takingly expensive collectors' editions which are effectively for millionaires only, e.g. www.paulkidby.com/the-definitive-good-omens-dunmanifestin-editions/

And just today, Terry Pratchett's autobiography has been announced:
*Really* necessary? Really?
