Well, I finished listening to this one this morning as I walked the dogs. Not sure what I thought of it. Story is good, well written and well read, it doesn't contradict established continuity . . . and yet I somehow found it a bit unsatisfying. I thought the inclusion of Gan was perhaps overbaking it and taking coincidence and continuity a bit too far, but that wasn't the main problem. The main issue I had was that it just wasn't the backstory I had imagined for Bayban, simple as that. I can't fault any specific aspect of it and if it had been a wholly original novel featuring wholly original characters in the B7 universe I would have enjoyed it a lot more, but it just wasn't how I imagined Bayban's background.
It is also very influenced by the Scottish play as we have the sci-fi equivalent of the 3 witches, a Cawdor/Glamis/King hereafter prophecy and Bayban's mother is very much the Lady Macbeth of the piece for reasons that become apparent.
Maybe I'm being overly harsh, as Fairs' take on Bayban is perfectly valid even if it's not quite how I imagined it. Perhaps the problem is more with my expectations than with the novel itself. If there was a poll I'd err on the side of generosity and give it a 4/5
