Is it better to make sure you've watched the TV version of a Doctor Who story before you read/listen to the Target novel or could I do the latter first?
I've already read the novel before the TV version for some stories such as the Dalek Invasion of Earth and the Gunfighters.

I'd personally avoid reading 3rd Doctor Target Novels before watching the TV Eps as they in particular are substantially richer experiences than the TV EPs. Regards mark687

As a kid in Canada, the ability to get DW on tv was extremely limited so I read all the Target books I could find at the library and can honestly say I read the book for the vast majority of the First through Fifth prior to seeing them as repeats on cable tv or buying the DVD's when they became available.
Either order is perfectly fine.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I’ve just done a binge of James Blish’s novelisations of Star Trek TOS (he is possibly the most overqualified author to ever adapt SF television to a novelisation) and he was using the production scripts rather than the scripts as shot. He also never saw an episode as he was living in the UK at the time. As a veteran Target Who reader I can say that when I got to finally see the stories I’d only read, the only effect I felt was that the stories on screen sometimes felt less epic than their novelised counterpart simply because the author frequently had an access to the story that Blish never did. The Targets are very faithful on the whole so it doesn’t really matter which you experience first.
