Loved this.
It’s exactly what I was wanting from Gallifrey: Time War. Moving away from the core Gallifrey characters and embracing the ensemble, whilst keeping Leela as the lead, has really refreshed the range. A lot more insight into the machinations of Gallifrey at war, the lengths the War Council are prepared to go to and the different dynamics within the War Room itself. They’re all fighting for the same cause, but have their own unique perspectives, ethics and morales.
Even the plots are suitably high concept and appropriate for the Time War. They may not always be the driving factor of the story, but it helps having the concept of the War Council and their stake in the victory of Gallifrey. It offers a variety and a different perspective to Eight helping out where he can, or War in the later days of the Time War.
The real highlight of the set for me was Ken Bones as The General. I’ve long wanted him on board and I enjoyed his fleeting appearance in the Eighth Doctor strand, but felt he was ultimately wasted. He’s fantastic in War Room, a complex and layered character, who is fundamentally a man of honour, despite his role, his responsibilities and who he shares the War Room with. I love the pairing of the General and Leela. And I must give Louise Jameson credit where it’s due. I’ve long confessed to fatigue of Leela, but the character is given a real shot in the arm in this, given purpose and presenting her with a new group of characters also allows her to develop. I’m quite happy to have her lead this range on the basis of the material she’s given in this, also I would like to see some Leela lite adventures as we follow other characters.
Slight criticism is that I thought the first half of the set was stronger than the last. I lost the plot a touch with Collateral Victim, although nothing that a relisten can’t sort out, I’d imagine. And I felt The First Days of Phaidon wasn’t as interesting when Leela & Narvin’s reunion took over, as I was more engaged with the people of Phaidon and the General’s side of things.
Looking forward to more, although it’s a shame it’s a year away!

I don’t want to say I’m conflicted but this was definitely not a set i should have listened to over the course of like a week (but I have been sick so it was sadly unavoidable). I really like the ensemble nature of the cast and how it’s not trying to be an extension of the previous series. Like I don’t thinks Romana is going to show up and having Leela as the lead is also just something that is a shame we haven’t had before.
I think the last episode might also be the strongest since it does the most to humanize certain characters.

I have been quite vocal in the past about how much I dislike the previous Gallifrey sets. So much so that I did not buy this set because I was pretty much done with the range. But a friend persuaded me to give it a listen, and to my great surprise I actually loved it! None of the morose acting by Lala Ward, none of the ridiculous, nonsensical faux-politics. I finally got the sense that we were dealing with civilizations here. It's a terrific turn around for this range and I'm glad I gave it another chance.

Oh I enjoyed this immensely. This reboot has really put this spin-off back into top gear.
The General is really fleshed out into a layered character fundamentally trying to do right by this hellish war, Rasmus as someone conflicted between what is practical and what he might wish and Ollistra as the spider in her element. Leela is the perfect anchor for navigating these Time Lords’ approaches. I really want more of this angle on Gallifrey.

Just finished the 4th story. A mix of brutal and hopeful stories - sometimes both at the same time.
I have high hopes for the next volumes.
Next part due July next year. Seems like a long time, but this is a time war ....

Half way through, and yes, war is nasty. A Time War even nastier. Nice way of getting round having Ollistra already established elsewhere via War Doctor...
