JNT sure loved to merch/brand up the show, right down to what was on the Doctor's clothes. But, despite it getting gaudier as it went, do you have any affinity for incorporating the question mark, or do you think it's way too literal, even more than a lot of the allegory and metaphors already was in Classic Who?

On my more fan-fic geek moments, I sort of imagined them to be a monogram, and what to human eyes is a question mark is the first letter/phoneme of the Doctor’s name.

It was the first step in giving characters uniforms as opposed to 'off the peg' clothes and, although the question marks were often pretty much lost in Tom's Series 18 costume, I didn't much care for them. It was surprising, after Colin's costume got so much stick, the the question marks were incorporated so much with Sylv's subsequent look.
Why would the Doctor wear question mark clothes? It just seemed cartoonish and unsubtle.

Be like if The Shadow appeared in a puff of smoke accompanied by a lightning flash.

I think the Doctor does it because he can. Yes, it is cartoonish and unsubtle and on par with the crazy silly villains from Batman. But I think it fits the character of the Doctor perfectly. He does it to appear silly and not taken as a thread and I think he is aware that he is the target of ridicule. He does not care and uses it to his advantage. I can understand JNT's decision. But then I am the person who openly wears THE coat and loves it....

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Terrible idea: it was when the Doctor stopped having a “look” and started having a costume instead.

Had they left it to a few question marks, it would have been tolerable. JNT should have been denied any input into costuming. Hell, from what I have seen, wardrobe should have been replacing his shirts with better options.

I don't hate the idea of it, but think it was done too bluntly. I like what June Hudson said about it to JNT:
'No gentleman would wear a question mark. The only way he'd wear it is if were very small, and the same colour [as the shirt], so that you only saw it when it caught the light.'
And I think that would be a cool way to incorporate the motif into a future Doctor's costume! (Or maybe cufflinks or a tie pin, something subtle in any case.)

Something to be "fixed" on future Blu ray special editions!
