I see praise for this story from a lot of people, including Peter Davison and Sarah Sutton. I personally have mixed feelings about it. Adric’s death was very dramatic of course.

I presume from the thread title you expect everyone to pile in dissing the show.
Nope. Ain't gonna happen. It was a cracker. I bawled my eyes out at the end.

It got rid of Adric, so it will always be great in my view. If only the modern series would take a page from that and leave dead companions DEAD (Bill and Clara, I'm looking at you!).

I thought Earthshock was very good ... especially the ending!

Same caveat as last time - in the 2014 DWM poll rankin every story to the 50th, Earthshock came in at 24, just between Tomb Of The Cybermen and just above The Five Doctors. So if you believe that up to November 2013 there were more than 23 better, its overrated. If not, its underrated. For me...I would have it a bit lower down but not so much that I would quibble with it. Its a solid Cyberman story that makes them a threat once more, it does indeed have a wonderful exit for Adric (who I never disliked) and I think tonally its kinda a test for Ressurection and even Androzani. A much grittier feel. The support cast early on feel like real tough men and I like Sheila Reid in it. I love the notion that space travel of this sort is so mundane by then than she would be a Captain. More akin to the office manager. Also a nice contrast with the characters earlier on. They did need, personally, to have Adric do more earlier on to really sell the departure - he saves the day here just for The Doctor to say "thats Adric!" as if he were always that proud of him. But that is on the season, not the story.

I suppose one of the reasons that I don’t rate this story as high as most people, is that I found the guest cast, apart from Professor Kyle, to be unlikeable.

It’s very much a game in two acts, and there is a degree of “whiplash” between the two settings because we go from a reasonably tense thriller in some caves into a bog standard base under Seige by the numbers story. what lifts it though is Davison. Davison hits every note, very stride. It’s probably the first real demonstration in Who of how versatile an actor he is. And, like Tombo, Tennant and Capaldi, when Davison brings his A Game, everyone else lifts their game to match.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

The Episode 1 cliffhanger is brilliant, if you’ve not seen it before and the end of the story is heartbreaking. The bits in between are serviceable and are probably my favourite Saward-penned episodes. I think it’s one of the standouts of the season, just behind Castrovalva and Kinda.

To be honest, it might be my favorite 5th Doctor series. Directly followed by Black Orchid. Yeah, I know, Androzani..... (which makes place 3) But this one pack an emotional punch and the ending leaves you shocked. I know I was when I saw it for the first time. Especially since the credits roll in silence! And I really do not like Adric. I only came to appreciate him a bit more after meeting Waterhouse and hearing his enthusiasm he brings to Big Finish.
I liked the serial enough to even get the Special Edition booklet DVD signed by the whole TARDIS crew- first and so far only signed DVD in my collection where I got them all. So yeah, no dissing from me, either.

I just want to say that I don’t dislike Earthshock, or The Caves of Androzani. They are good, I just think there are better Doctor Who stories.

I'm going to say no, it's not overrated. I admit to some bias as this is among my top three televised 5th Doctor stories as well as one of my favorite Cybermen stories. It's held up to many, many viewings for me and I think that's in large part due to the dramatic tension produced by the looming threat of the Cybermen, who keep the Doctor on the backfoot throughout the episode, which makes for some exciting television, and the emotional impact of the episode, which the actors navigated perfectly.

A excellent story, tense, dramatic & exciting plus a shocker of a ending one of my favourite Fifth Doctor story's.
I remember crying Adric died & my mom reassuring me the Doctor would save him next week.
Erm.....nope that when i realised parents lie.

Looking back on Adric’s death, they could have handled the aftermath better. Either Time-Flight could have done that, or Adric’s death could have occurred earlier in part 4, maybe with 6 minutes to go, in order to give the Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan more room to grieve.

I think it was a mistake setting Time Flight directly after the Earthshock finale. Adric's death does seem brushed aside quite callously, whereas if they'd had a moment of reflection at the beginning of Time Flight, the Doctor could have said something like, "but that was three months ago," (or something like that) to indicated time had passed off-camera.
