When it comes to Who, do you like the episodes to just use a musical score throughout, or do like/prefer using licensed songs? Do you think their use is ever justified if it's not 'part' of the reality within the scene, like on a radio?

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Unless it’s being used to “date” an episode, I much prefer an orchestrated score. Songs age quickly and, unless they’re being used for comedic purpose - like Toxic and Tainted Love in EOTW - will often feel a bit like a desperate effort to be hip.

All depends, Don’t Stop Me Know in Mummy is still one of the best moments in Who. Still gives me chills. Meanwhile a lot of the use in RTD’s era doesn’t work for me, but mileage may vary.

I remember RTD bein asked in DWM (I hope his column is returning with him!) about if he worried that use of tracks like The Scissor Sisters would date the show and his response, I think correctly, is that he cant worry about that. If it helped the show NOW seem more current and cool, then he had no issue. Britney in the second episode of the revived show sent a messahe - this is NOT 1989. It is a massive show now with a soundtrack to prove it. I mean a score can date just as badly (some early electronic Pertwee ones certainly have) as pop tunes so I think any music will be a product of its time.
But as always...its not either/or for me - it depends. What does the story need? You are having Yaz back home - some Sam Fender on in the background is not an issue. She is from a time and place that would not just work but be normal. Wheras add Sam to a space adventure on Peladon? OK...bit different.
I am a fanboy for Murray Gold but he had that talent for new music that sounded like it could be from another world - The Long Song from Akhaten is the most perfect track for Matt and his epic speech. So it is both score and a song, albeit one we have never heard. Talent. Ditto the For Ten track from Chritmas Invasion (best heard on the S1 and 2 soundtrack, done by Neil Hannon) - its a pop tune but a new one. And fantastic.
