After to re-listening to the free extract of Departure and Arrival I have come down off the fence and purchased this.
For me it has not really been about the recasting, reimagining or reworked stories because I am taking it as an Audio Adaptation (like the NA adaptations). I know the story but that shouldn't put you off. However the price has been the issue for me. As I've said in other threads, being mainly a download customer I think £35 for this (download) is way too expensive - no matter the cost of the licence etc. So I find that if I want it I either have to wait for a potential sale, with no guarantee that it will ever be cheaper than £35 or go the whole hog and purchase the CD for measly £5 more. I think the boxset is worth £40 because of the "limited" status and the amount of content it contains.
So, for the first time ever I find myself being mercenary with a BF product! I have bought the CD package, but as I would have just bought the download (at a better price), I will sell on the boxset and hope to make some money back on it. If I can get £20 for the boxset, the person buying it will have a bargain and I will have got the download for £20, which sounds like a much better price. Of course if the Prisoner bombs, I'll be left with a boxset nobody wants ... but that's the gamble.
I wouldn't be able to do this if I hadn't managed to preorder all of the other things I want this year, last year. So fortunately I don't have to find the money for Doom Coalition, River, 10, Churchill, Unit, but it does mean that I will have to wait to try out a different range (Avengers would have been the next one) and I didn't purchase anything in the xmas sale.
I hope it does really well and we get a volume 2, but I think Nick's (?) pricing needs to be looked at. If a new boxset comes out, I don't want to have to be in the same position again.
Cheers
Tony
Does this make me an honest mercenary??

I really like The Prisoner. In principle, I'm willing to give it a go without McGoohan (I liked Sapphire and Steel even without Lumley and McCallum, after all) but a remake doesn't appeal to me. I'm happy to have 2 remakes out of 26 episodes of The Avengers. But it's hard to do a superior remake to something that's already brilliant...
I have absolutely no objection to the marketing and I'm sure BF will find an audience to make the show a success. I just think it wouldn't be my cup of tea.

How about if you had no interest in The Prisoner? If a product you had no intention of purchasing was being promoted well about what you would have expected for the first entry in a brand new range? And such an extravagant product for that first entry, with a suitably extravagant price tag?

Ok, ignore the blanket advertising...
Ive heard it.
Its truly very good. If you liked the 60s show... Get this.
If the prisoner isnt part of your psycological make up or you have no interest...
Just ignore it.

Wasn't that interested in the series to begin with.
Too expensive to take a gamble on.
Virtual unknown Actor ( who IMO its debateable sounds anything like McGoohan)
The Hard Sell from BF: 3 Trailers, 8 YouTube vids Countless Tweets and FB Posts, being dropped into nearly every piece of promotional material.

I'm a fan and I think they overdid the marketing on the prisoner. Where is the promotion this month for avengers? There is none. They have spent pretty much all their time hyping the prisoner. same with most of the other ranges that are due release this month. If I didn't know by going on the website I would probably would have never have known they had other releases due this month.

How about if you had no interest in The Prisoner? The marketing is their chance to change that. In my case they haven't - and now I'm happily ignoring it!

I've bought the CD and I'm very much looking forward to an audio adventure in The Village.
Yes, £40 is steep and I'm not that bothered about the included booklet, but I have no issue with the promotion and the plugging.
So I now have River Song, The Prisoner, and The Avengers 5 to look forward to this month. And on pay day at the back end of January I will also get The Churchill Years. How good is all that?
Bring it on.

I'm probably not going to get this, i have a passing interest in the TV show but not enough to justify the cost. I can't say i am as massively irritated by the marketing as some very clearly are. Its a new product and they want it to sell, of course they're going to advertise it hard, i wouldn't expect anything less, especially when its something new and they're not sure if it has the same built in audience as Doctor Who. If i saw a picture on the website i just ignored it and didn't click on the article

I've seen a couple of episodes of the show and it was okay but never really grabbed my interest. I can't understand why they would remake existing material, if I wanted to experience the Prisoner I would watch the series, I'm not sure why I would ever want to buy this.

I'm a fan of The Prisoner, owning the original, but the fact they're redoing old episodes instead of purely doing their own thing has made me want to wait and see what people think before purchasing this one. I think that's part of the hype, honestly. The Prisoner is so distinctive piece of television, that it's quite an audacious notion to even remake it - and the shadow of the 2006 remake does loom large, that you need a mad push like that for people to stand up and take notice. I think putting a new spin on original episodes will probably only be a feature of the first box set, with subsquent box sets telling new stories.

I hope someone finds a tactful way to ask about the pricing of the range and how out of kilter it is with the rest of BF's policies, including launching a new range with a £40 deluxe edition with no cheaper option. The blurb may as well say "Casual Listeners Not Wanted".

I still think the DL in particular is ridiculously overpriced.

Well, they've been asking among each other in forums and facebook pages. I don't expect an answer there Just "Well, it's one of the most expensive licences we've bought, we didn't think it had wider appeal to a mass audience so a limited run at a premium price was thought to be the best option to launch the range" would do for me. The only other release I remember price being SUCH an issue on was Hinchcliffe Presents but with that one, there's clearly a massive Doctor Who fanbase who will buy it anyway (even while moaning about price) and we also had the option to get it discounted heavily if we also subbed to that years 4DAs (which many of us do anyway) so PHP had an existing audio fanbase and more buying options.

I've been thinking for months now how fed up I am of the constant promotion for this series and it's just got worse and worse the closer we've come to the release date. I agree, if there was a positive buzz surounding this release I'd think the constant flood of promotion was about milking it for all it's worth, but there seems to be a lack of enthusiasm and the flood seems more like desperation.

I agree. Don't ignore a question, answer it in some form or fashion. Price was the single biggest issue with this item. As noted several times before, I don't give a rats butt about deluxe packaging. I'm going to look at it once. Period. The end. I want the stories and I want the audio extras. Anyway, it is out there and in the wind. I hope I enjoy it.
