There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I love it. It’s ironic, though, that a show about economic refugees would so popular.

Like timelord I saw it on first transmission (in Australia) as a young’un. The characters were all ridiculously easy to relate to and the scripts were terrific as well. I also had the novelisation by Fred Taylor (who also wrote a couple of season 1 episodes) and that managed to flesh out the characters and situations a lot as well.
We didn’t get the second series in Australia but we did get the third and fourth. I have the dvds of the first two seasons (and, like Timelord, I prefer series 1) and while aspects of it haven’t aged well, it is still a great show. Interestingly, in this digital age, something that really struck me was that the characters are always reading: there’s magazines and novels all over the place in the first season. I’ve watched a few other shows from the same era (as have we all) and I don’t remember quite as much reading material being on display there, though I might not have been paying as much attention.
Like I said, I loved the characters, especially the relationship between Oz, Neville and Dennis who were the core of the show. I think the 7 main actors were wonderful and it’s been interesting to follow their careers since then as most of them built a pretty impressive body of work afterwards (especially Tim Spall).
The writing team behind the show, Clement and la Frenais, have had a damned impressive career, too. As well as Likely Lads, Porridge and a host of other sitcoms they had a pretty good career in the movies. Nobody else in my family enjoyed AW,P so I get a particular thrill out of pointing out that they also wrote Chicken Run and Flushed Away, which were pretty popular in our house. They also penned Still Crazy, one of my favourite rock music movies, about a band that gets back together after 20 years apart and then decide to go on tour, which features quite a few AW,P alumni.

shutupbanks Great Insight. I’ve been thinking about picking up a copy of the novel if I can find it. Also, interesting that Series 2 didn’t air in Australia.

Probably. I only know that it aired here on ITV in the 80s, and then on BBC One in the 2000s when it was revived. I would highly recommend it.

Never heard about it. So this plays out in Germany? Interesting. And to my complete NON- surprise, this is not available over here, except if I were to purchase the DVD.
