So…same old companions, same script editor, same producer, John Dorney doing most of the writing, and two old enemies, plus Drax…
The Big Finish Twitter account boldly proclaims this as a new start. I don’t see much new here.
Think I’ll be passing on this.

Hardly the big announcement that should come immediately after the promise of increasing prices is it? More of the same old, same old. But hang on, Helen hasn’t met the Daleks yet so we must do that!
David Richardson is really clutching at straws in the news article. And John Dorney penning half of the set isn’t exciting given his Stranded instalments.

I mean… standalone adventures for Eight is a nice change of pace, especially after Stranded but… Daleks? Really? Again? Why is the solution to stick Daleks in everything?

Agreed We have had nearly 10 years of this tardis team give us something new big finish are they really creatively bankrupt to create a new tardis team?

Tbf I don’t really want 8 to be in an infinite cycle of new TARDIS teams forever.
It is perplexing that they’re trying to pass this off as a fresh start though.

As Liv is right up there amongst my favourite companions ever, I'll happily give both this and Connections a go.

I love the cover art, but just doing stand alone stories and at least three returning elements, I can’t say I’m too enthused. But I do love the team, and always ready to go in with an open mind.

I have to bite my tongue to say "here we go again". However, I had already pre-ordered this ONE YEAR AGO in good faith, and I do love Liv, so I will give this at least the benefit of the doubt. But here I am, only just having proclaimed in a different thread about the apparent lack of freshness and originality of BF- and I need not look any further than one of my previously favorite ranges (8th Doctor Adventures) and what is now presented as "news" to us. Quod erat demonstrandum. I REALLY, vainly, hope it turns out that Liv somehow got changed into an artificial intelligence during her time on Kaldor to at least try to introduce a new surprising element into this. But not really having my hopes up for that. But my biggest gripe is not even the old tried and tested team (I mean, how often did we have Ace and Leela and Peri already?) My biggest gripe is that these stories do not sound like anything new. If it was at least the same old beloved team in some new settings.
EDIT: I am sorry if I have come across as quite negative recently- I have been stuck at home all week and being cooped up always makes me go into morose mode.

I'm quite surprised to read that John Dorney's involvement isn't more popular. Most of the stories he's written have been excellent and, I thought, favourites among the listening fans. I haven't heard Stranded, so perhaps that's the culprit! Equally, I'd have thought Liv would have been welcome in far more sets yet. She's a great character, played well by an actress who is a bit of a casting coup for Big Finish.
There does, however, seem to be a recurring lack of interesting new ideas. More Daleks is, I'm afraid, a reason for me not to order things now. Ever since the long awaited new Seventh Doctor set has been revealed as an un-asked-for return to Ribos (and familiar recast characters therein) and another confronation with the Cybermen, I've noticed an uninspiring cascade of unnecessary returnees. Sylvester's time on TV - love it or otherwise - was one of the most inventive and experimental eras of the show. It would be nice to see those qualities present in his stories - and in other ranges too, come to that.

Do not get me wrong, I love Dorney, he has written some of the most awesome stories. And it is no secret that Liv is my favorite BF companion. However. You answer the question yourself. Daleks? Really? There are no words left to express of how much I am tired of them. And yes! Bring back the experimental. Bring back what made Scherzo and History of Fear great. I am over the usual stories. I thirst for some weird experiments.

Got to go with teeth pulling myself! Dorney is a great writer when he's inspired and his early inputs into the Eighth Doctor stories were superb; however I think now is the time to take a step back and let someone else have a go, and maybe try and work his magic on a different range he hasn't had much of a hand in before. I think that would give both him and the listener a chance to be challenged again.
Can't say either set is gripping me and as Stranded had the get out clause to call it time on Liv and Helen then, for now at least, that's it for me.

Well, I like the covers a lot - but I was really hoping for more of Helen and the Doctor travelling alone. Maybe the next run.
(I will say I feel a bit more interested in an *Eighth Doctor* Dalek story than any other - the last time he faced them was Dark Eyes, the next is TLV & the Time War... so there's room for some interesting developments, especially because it's clearly a time-bending tale.)

For what it’s worth, I wasn’t supposed to be writing quite as much of these as it’s turned out. But circumstances rather got in the way of that…
Really proud of the scripts though.

Eh, they announced quite some time ago that there would be two 8DA releases at the end of this year, and David Richardson did say that Stranded would be the end of the boxset format some time ago. Can't say it's surprising that it ended up being that the two releases would follow on the story so far. And FWIW, I missed them as soon as I finished listening to Stranded 4

I also cry foul on this supposedly being a fresh new start for the Eighth Doctor. Still, some of the stories do intrigue me so and seeing more of Drax is always a good thing. I wonder if his appearance in this will lead to an explanation of what he was up to during the Time War in a later boxset? Or possibly finally close the lid on that possibility?

The news release reads as if the "new start" is supposed to be that it's the first time in 10 years McGann isn't caught up in some grand plot spanning four box sets.
Each story, or at least each set, is standalone.

"Daleks again" would be my main objection, but it's not enough of one to not purchase the set. Especially with young War going strong.

Frank admission- I started on the first new war Doctor set. So far, I have not finished it..... It just did not grip me at all.
EDIT: I did not post any reviews since I was afraid of coming across as too overly critical.
