Another week, another chapter of Gallifrey...
I just finished re-listening to this one and have to say I very much enjoyed myself again, just as I did with the previous story.
Scattered thoughts I jotted down while listening:
Between the Valyes thing at start and the Leela/Romana conversation, the way this episode opens makes it feel like a series premiere rather than it being partway through series 2. Not a criticism, just an observation
Narvin's caution about Romana speaking to Pandora feels very very warranted, and K9's dismissiveness misguided and arrogant. Interesting how a character who has generally been antagonistic so far at this point in the series is actually correct where the protagonists are wrong.
Pandora speaking through K9, telling Romana exactly what's coming in the civil war in the next episode and series 3, becomes extra chilling since with the benefit of retrospect because we know that no lies are being told. What Pandora says to Romana isn't dishonest in the slightest -- she's being taunted with the truth.
The academy's descent into factionalism and chaos feels a little rushed, especially since we're seeing it through the Lower Decks character POV and have only just met those characters. Which isn't to say they're bad, every actor there brings their A game to the table. It's just that the characters and setting are so new that it feels a little unearned.
The final conversation between Leela and Andred is really lovely and beautifully done. It's touching, in no small part because of how wonderfully heartfelt the performances are by both actors.
The overall sound design at this point is MUCH better than it was at the start of the range. This may have happened sooner, but it didn't really jump out to me till I was listening to this one.
Darkel announcing her power play toward the end of this story is an awesome moment. The way it builds on previous stories, that ever-rising 'oh no' dread because you can see exactly what's coming doesn't detract from the moment in the slightest; if anything, it enhances the moment.
Romana sounding increasingly unhinged in the last minutes of the episode is good stuff but maybe should've been held to the start of the next episode as the cold open.
Anywho, good stuff! Looking forward to Imperiatrix next week!
