This one didn't sit quite right for me.
I mentioned in the previous thread, that it felt like the Time Lord Civil war didn't feel like it had any lasting consequences, and I think that criticism stands even more now. We've just wrapped up a civil war, but the only named casualties are Leela, who was only injured, and Hallan, who was put on ice. While It's understandable that Pandora's side was casualty free, given Romana was using non lethal tactics, the fact that no one on either side has died really makes it feel like a non event.
My other issue is that the war itself is wrapped up by the end of this story, Pandora is gone, Darkel is in custody and Romana has come out of it victorious. But the entire civil war has only lasted about two hours. The end result is that the whole thing feels a little rushed. A more recent comparison is that the whole thing feels a little like the Dark Universe release. There's a good story, but it's squeezed into a time limit that just doesn't fully allow for it to be explored properly.
I do want to say, that I haven't spoken much about Mary Tamm in the last few topics, an oversight on my part. I've deeply enjoyed her part in the last few releases, and I'm glad that we got more material with her. I've always felt her Romana was always under represented, and these last few stories are a nice remedy for that.
I think the build up to the civil war is peak Gallifrey, but once the war actually started, the writing staff were keen to get it out of the way as quickly as they could.
I will say that the cast are all on fine form in this release, my issues with the plot aside, the main cast are giving excellent performances, so much so that I was surprised that this was directed by Gary Russell!
I think this is a fine example of average Gallifrey. It's good, but the range has been capable of so much more up to this point
