Just finished this today. It was great. In the interview for 1101 The Rules of the House they refer to Season 9 of John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme. And Finnemore is specifically referenced in this story. If you liked this you should check that out. It looks like all of the episodes of that season are still available. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000vqr4The summary of that: "Every episode in this series of Souvenir Programme is made up of scenes from one person's life, played in reverse order. There's no narrative to the episode; it's still a sketch show, not a sitcom... but the sketches in each episode all happened to one person, played by one member of the cast, over the course of their lifetime" So, the listener is the one bouncing around around in time. Everything builds together very nicely.

Great stuff, thanks for sharing. Number 2 is a revelation; sterling job from the team splicing all of the recordings together!

Thank you for posting. It's a wonderful article. I already love Tim Foley's work, and now I love it, and him, even more.

Thanks for sharing. Interesting-
What is the big mistake? Has anyone noticed?
I will do a re-listen one of these days, and will have to pay attention.

An interesting and worthwhile experiment. If I had to sum it up I would say it was like a timey wimey version of Penmarric, which had some similar themes (the TV version, I have never read the book). I would like to see more 4 hour stories by one writer in the River series, although not sure that a string of carbon copy stories devoid of scifi villains and relying primarily on emotional content would keep their appeal to a wider market over the longer term, but definitely a worthwhile one-off

I wrote up a great big long post about this set, exhaustively detailing all my thoughts... and then I lost it. Oops! I'll probably do a longer write-up in a few months, after a relisten, but I definitely want to share my general impressions of this set right now.
In short, I think Friend Of The Family is one of the best Doctor Who stories ever written. Whenever I talk about the theoretically endless potential of Doctor Who as a storytelling vehicle (and bemoan the series' constant failure to live up to that potential) this is precisely the kind of story I'm talking around. An intricate, deeply compelling mystery, playing with linearity and time travel, deeply rooted in characters -- with no monsters or villains or any other source of artificial tension.
This is what Doctor Who looks like at its very best. This is the kind of story that makes me genuinely excited for the future of the series, and proud to call myself a fan. A spectacular, stunning release that immediately earns a place of honor among the very best of Big Finish's dramas.

My gosh. This was bloody amazing. Just bought this on CD and listened over a few days. I had to draw the family tree on paper,as I went along, so that I didn't lose track where River was at. It has been one of most amazing BF releases I've heard since i started listening to them (since 2004).
