I’ve been quite fond of this series for some time now, even though I might not be the intended audience. As it’s 30 years since it started (the tv series at least, the manga started in 1991), I thought I’d go back and resume where left off with the manga, and it’s been very enjoyable.
I really hope the re-dub of the 90s anime will get an official UK release sometime so that I can watch it properly.

Here are the Doctor Who companions that I think would be suited to each Inner Sailor Guardian.
Sailor Moon: Peri Brown
Sailor Mercury: Zoe Heriot
Sailor Mars: Tegan Jovanka
Sailor Jupiter: Leela
Sailor Venus: Jo Grant

Do you have any advice for reading the manga? EG the best version/editionIt's one of those classics I've been meaning to read, someday, for a while, but the one time I tried to get into I found the quality was pretty poor and I couldn't quite parse the panel layout (like the ink was too light or something, I dunno).
(Speaking of those old classics, I recently read Nausicaa and it was incredible!)

I'm familiar with the basic premise, mostly through cultural osmosis, but no, I haven't seen the anime. I know it's very well-regarded, and I've seen various clips on YouTube (mostly funny scenes) as well as the usual memes (butterfly, cousins, etc.). And I feel like I've seen the transformation sequence parodied several hundred times.
I might try the Eternal Edition, then. I've only got a few books of nonstandard dimensions (gonna say... Ghost in the Shell, Gundam The Origin, Nausicaa and the Dragon Ball VizBigs) and I find that the larger paper size really does make reading a much more enjoyable experience. Especially when the art is spectacular and filled with tiny details.

I’m from the UK where the anime had airings on Fox Kids and CITV in the early 2000s, but nothing after that. And that was just the original censored English dub. The newer uncut dub has never been officially released in Britain to any degree.

I'm in the USA. I think Sailor Moon aired over here way back when the anime boom happened in the early-00s, but it was just a bit before my time. And TBH I didn't really get into anime/manga til high school. I grew up on Star Trek and various really old sitcoms that were on when I got home from school -- things like the Adam West Batman show, Get Smart, MASH, Dragnet, Bewitched, etc.
So, erm... yeah, my media habits have always been very out-of-step with my generation. And the whole ASD/mutism thing also kept me insulated from the various popular media fads that came and went.
In my life I've generally tried to explore all of the "classics," or as many as I can, but that's a bit of a tricky task when it comes to anime (and manga). I dunno, it's a medium that's very YMMV and a lot of the impact is determined by the context of the viewer. EG I found Evangelion to be very powerful -- painful even -- and utterly unforgettable when I saw it (IIRC it was my very first anime) but I don't think I would have reacted even half so strongly had i nit been a (very) depressed teenager at the time. It's possible I may already be out of that "window" where I'm able to appreciate something like Sailor Moon -- though I do still remember one of the clips I saw relatively recently and found it pretty funny. I don't know the precise context, but I assume the girls were being targetted by one of those cliched Sentai villains, and were sticking together for safety, and one of the girls was being really hyper and paranoid and pointing at various random people in nearby suggesting that they might be spies for the big bad. The joke being that she's obviously way too paranoid... with the twist being that she was 100% dead-on!
I dunno. I found it pretty amusing. It's stuck with me.
